Port Aransas Stay

Considering "On the Beach" campground and the "Pioneer Beach Resort" to stay at for a month in mid-February. We're in our late 50's and enjoy walking the beach. Our daughter & 2 little kids will be visiting for a week. If anyone has stayed at either of these places can you please comment on the place, closeness to the water, etc.

Which would you recommend? Thank you.

We have stayed at the Pioneer resort and it is nice. The price is OK and the sites are a bit tight but not bad. Everything is level and the utilities are good. The walk to the beach is a boardwalk over the sand dunes. The beach is wide, flat and easy to walk on. Many fish along there and the beach is open to vehicles so keep aware as you walk. Check RVParkReview.com for more information.

The big differences:

On the Beach, is very small, tight spaces, in town, sand and gravel drives and parking. It's just a 1/2 block behind the dune to the drivable beach.

Pioneer, is huge, maybe 4 miles south of town, long boardwalk to the beach, up to maybe a 1/2 mile walk if you are on the west side of the park. But all paved concrete pads and drives, and better parking. The town shuttle comes down to the park, to do their turn around and head north. Also I think I read, you can not drive a rental golf cart in the park, and carts are rented everywhere for driving town and the beach.

Don't miss the Belt Sander Races at the Gaff on every other Sat. Get the local tourist paper, and buy a Port Aransas Beach parking sticker for $12 to park on the beach.

This is our 3rd winter at Pioneer and we love it. The campground is very well maintained and the staff is very friendly. Great place to walk or ride bikes. You do have to own your golf cart as rentals are not allowed. We think the prices are fair, considering you are right across the dunes from the beach.

Port A is a funky beach town, a reminder of years ago, went the beaches were not covered in condos. You can cross over to Aransas Pass via the ferry and watch the dolphins swim in the shipping channel. Good suggestions from Dave and Dolly. The locals are very friendly and welcome Winter Texans.

We have stayed at pioneer resort in the summer and liked it. Good size place, two pools, and a dinning hall. They say no rental golf carts, but Bron's carts in town told us they have an agreement with them, I believe they cover the signage up or something, and you can use their carts. Just ask if interested. Still have to pay the fee at the resort. We did not check in to it. We did rent a cart and drove up the beach and over the board walk and just park in the back of the resort to eat lunch at the MH, then back to town. The shuttle bus will get you around for 25 cents. We are going back in April. Town seems about the same as it was when I was a kid, now 52. Have fun.
