Thank you all for the suggestions. Perhaps I should have said that I only have 2 weeks off work and so need to get to California quickly so we can spend a few days with my wife's family before we have to head back home.

So here is a compromise I have come up with (remember we were first going to take I-10 through quartzsite):

Day 1: South Llano River State Park, Junction, TX (Friday night after work, this just gets us out of San Antonio)

Day 2: Ruidoso, (6000') Should be as cool as it gets along a southern route.

Day 3: Gallup, Still at 5000'

Day 4: Kingman or Laughlin area.

Day 5: Bakersfield (I know it will be hot, but we get to go to the Crystal Palace so it should be worth it).

Day 6: Napa.

Hopefully the Air Conditioners can handle the load. The generator is working well so we will probably use it most of the way going down the road.

I'll come back and let you know if it is horrible.

While in Bakersfield you might stay at the Bakersfield River Run Park which is nice and only about 1.5 miles to the Crystal Palace. The Palace has music on Wed - Sat and a good food menu. If you have time you might also go to Luigis for lunch, it is an Italian Restaurant that has been there for over 100 years. Another good choice is the Wool Growers for a Basque menu.

Laughlin will be out of your way adding time and mileage to your trip, and it will be 10 to 15 degrees hotter than Kingman. Kingman has several RV parks close to the freeway.

With only 2 weeks time your plan is very doable but yes, stay in Kingman or Williams would even be cooler.

Hope all goes well and yes, please return and let us know how the trip was!

I agree, I'd try to get to Flagstaff and then you can get to Bakersfield in one day from there, although its a long day. We live in Bakersfield and there are several very nice RV Parks with 50 amp service, swimming pool and restaurants. Or you can park in my driveway and plus into the electric for the cost of a 6 pack! Late july, count on 100+ here too!
