Plenty of free dry camping at the Quechan Casino, but it does get busy in January. Never have gotten glasses so no help on that part of your question.

As to the sun glass' s, there are places in the US you can get them cheaper than Mexico.
I was very much surprised and happy. Two pair for well under $100 with exam. Now that is their cheapest, on mine I spent near $300 on the two pair, one Sun glass' s and one pair reading and distance vision. Like a lot of places and Mexico glass also it's the extras that get you Frame is the biggie then lens protestants. We had friends that when and we went with and their glass' s were very comparable to normal US prices after all the add ons.

I've been buying prescription glasse here since the late '90s: Eyeglasses Online - Buy Prescription Glasses & Eyeglass Frames | Zenni Optical
Zenni Optical sells prescription glasses and perception sunglasses as well as non- prescription sunglasses.
Coincidentally only yesterday I received a pair of bifocals made to my prescription from Zenni, (they arrived 12 days after I placed the order).
The total cost was only $89.85. shipped to my door.
Local places wanted between $350.00, (Walmart) and $475.00 (my optometrist).

I found buying glasses at Costco (I am in El Centro for winter) was as reasonable cost as buying in Los Algodones. Have the aftersales support/refitting as well.
As for crossing the border into Algodones, I found it painless, and it is safe (park on US side, walk across and walk back). I do not look to buy medications but others swear by the better prices in Mexico than US. I buy Kahlua and peanuts; dentists are high quality and cheaper than US.
Hope this helps,
Brian

Algodones is totally safe. It's not a 24 hour Border Town and certainly not the typical Border town. They throw a Welcome Back Snowbird party in Dec and a Good Bye party in Mar. My wife and I both got 2 pairs of bi-focal glasses each for 80 bucks (80 for me, 80 for her) Each of us got clear and sun glasses. This was two years ago and they are still good. Next glasses will be at either Costco or Shopko, they are about the same price.
ps; if you go be sure to park your car in the Border parking lot and pay the fee. Do not park on the side of the road, it's posted and they will impound in a heart beat.
