Recent Gulfport, MS Trip
Just got home last weekend (Mar 13) from a week in Gulfport MS. A lot of you may have seen the large amount of rain that inundated the Gulf-coast for most of the week 7 - 11 March. We stayed at a CG next to the Wolf River which by most accounts is a creek with a name. Most of the week we dodged the rain as it stayed mostly to the West and North of us. In the back of my mind, I knew that the water falling up North was eventually gonna come our way. I awoke Friday morning Mar 11 to pounding rain that started the night prior. As I made my way to the coffee pot to turn on around 0630, I decided to take a peek outside and see what was going on. Glad I done this when I did. I found the river up, out of its bank and the remainder of the park resembled a swamp. I calmly woke the Misses and as politely as I could, I told her "Get up and get dressed". I won't say what she said but trust me when I say, she wasn't impressed with my Friday morning wake up service, especially since it didn't have a cup of coffee with it. As she was preparing rather quickly the slides to move inward, I was calling another park that was further East in Biloxi and was on higher ground. Approximately 30 minutes later, Cummins warming up, water and electric put away, jacks being raised, slides in, we were rolling out of this swamp. What caught my eye as we were rolling out of this park, were folks outside, awnings out, fire pits lit, some had coffee, some had what appeared to be Mimosas, all enjoying the rain. I digress. So from there, we found a nice camp site, near Biloxi, for the night, then out Saturday morning early with Texas in our crosshairs. Yep, you guessed it, we plowed thru lots of rain and in one area of La. we went down to one lane (Westbound) as the water was up and covering the right lane. It took us 3 hours to go 8 miles in one area. It stopped raining shortly after crossing the Texas border, which by the way, took us 11 hours to get to from Biloxi. A normal timeframe for this trip is about 5 to 6 hours. Fast forward to now, this trip was one that will go in the books for most bazaar. Our Tuscany plowed thru this without any hiccups, we enjoyed the one armed bandits on the Gulf and their attempt to take my hard earned money. I am quite sure we will visit this area again. I normally take a good look at weather forecasts and this time when I wasn't paying attention as good as I should, taught me a lesson about paying more attention to long range weather.
