Recommendations for stops on way from NW PA to NH

We are making our way to Maine this summer. We are going to spend a few nights in the White Mountains of NH and are trying to decide on a good route and where we should stop on our travels from western PA.

I am thinking our first stop should be somewhere around Syracuse and then not sure if we should just go due east into southern Vermont or start traveling northeast and go through northern VT.

Any suggestions for campgrounds and/or routes to travel would be appreciated! We have the majority of our trip already planned out it is just the first few days and our first few legs of the trip that we aren't sure about.

Thanks!

Depending on where in western Pa you're starting, save tolls and take I-86 to Binghamton
and the I-88 to Albany. Once at Albany you have several options to Maine, I-90, or up I-87 and then US 4 across southern Vt, or pick up I-91 off US 4 to US 2 east to Maine.

Oh - thank you!! I didn't think about tolls and that route would be a great option.

Agree I-86 & I-88 better than Thruway
From Albany we frequently take Rt & thru Troy NY which runs into Vt 9 and runs across S Vt. in NH It's 2 lane most of the way but a scenic drive.

In NH you have to decide to head right over into S Me or go on up into NH lakes region which is also pretty - several roads from NH over into Me
