Two possibilities come to mind-
1) its the national (and therefore in some minds "federal") nightly croupier fee that KOA locations pay to KOA corporate, like a method for collecting franchise fees.
2) perhaps that particular KOA is on federal land, and that's the concessionaire fee paid to the feds.

The RFT is a deduction for the sales tax you paid when you purchased your RV. It was a temporary tax rebate from the fed. It is over now.

Sounds like another way to suck in more money for KOA.

As the OP all I have done is report what I was told. If it proves to be false great. That's why I reported it to try and determine if it's just an added thing here in MI or only at KOA"S and if it really is a Federal tax. If it were a state tax it should read RST instead of RFT. The lady at the office said it was a Federal tax. However she is just saying what her boss is telling her to say so who knows. If over some time it appears that it is just a state thing (MI)or a KOA thing then we will know and can react accordingly. Until we figure exactly what it is we'll wait.

Thanks for all the responses. This is a great forum to get questions like this resolved.

Huh? I'm trying to figure out what your post means and, frankly, it's over my head. Can you post a link or address where I can get more info?

We traveled all summer, visiting 9 States and some of the campgrounds were KOAs and we did not get tagged with a RFT anywhere....

If it's like a lot of things somebody made a request that the $8 be posted on your bill separate from the camping charge and they just didn't get around to it. Or there may be some other explanation. The government makes rules then never follows up to see if it was followed. We all know they are good about enforcing only what they want to enforce.

Please explain.

How does charging $8 more per night constitute a "deduction for the sales tax you paid when you purchased your RV"??

Who would have requested such a thing? The government?

Seems to me that if there had been some sort of new tax imposed nationally on campsites which resulted in a 25% increase in the average night's stay... the forum would have been burning up about it.

Have never heard of such a tax.. I am from Michigan and currently parked in Michigan. And I've never heard of such a tax.

Suggest you write KOA HQ, and depending on the answer you get. Mi Atty General.

Never let an opportunity to bash KOA get away.
I have never had an add-on.
Stay away from them. I like good site selection.

Official (non)response from KOA:

"Thank you for contacting the KOA Home Office. Our KOA campgrounds are independently owned and operated and do set their own rates and policies. To ask specific questions regarding reservations, cancellations, rates, rules and policies or amenities, please call or email the campground directly where you are interested in staying."

Glad to be of service.
