Sounds/looks like they added a surcharge at that one campground to increase their profits and still advertise a low(?) space cost.

Sounds like a " federal ( national) " franchise fee the campground pays to the KOA corporate for ea night.. The owner just put it in his fee ( hidden ) prior to this and is now using a cute way of breaking that fee out , using a term that's not accurate. IF there were a national tax there would be more than just a few noticing it ! And at more places than KOA.

I would want my $8/day back unless the CG can show you want it is, and where they remit the collected tax to a government agency.

Before this thread gets locked for political comments, I'd like to ask the OP to speak to a MANAGER / OWNER to get an explanation of what this fee is REALLY about. KOA typically use a lot of" workkampers" at the desk who probably won't really know what the "RFT" is for, but it isn't a federal tax, IMO.

TeJay here, and I'm the OP.
Hey folks don't get to upset. We got charged $8 for the night and it was listed as an RFT or Recreational Federal Tax. We have never encountered it before or since. As I said earlier the lady in the office, probably just a hired hand told us what I have reported. KOA has washed their hands of the issue by saying that it is a franchise and each CG does it's own thing. We departed the CG at 8-AM and are now in St.Louis so I can't ask any more ???'s.
My advice is to always check your bills and make sure of the charges. If KOA did this then and it is not really a Fed Tax I will call KOA and also request that the DW not use KOA again. $8 is $8 times each night so we won't do it again.
TeJay

I don't think anyone is getting upset unless someone jumped to the conclusion that there really was a Federal tax without checking things out further. I think the best thing to do that this point is for some motivated individual to call the KOA you stayed at for an explanation.

They could have called it just about anything they wanted and you would still have had to pay it or move on.

When reserving sites in Michigan State Parks on the DNR site, there is an $8.00 non-refundable reservation fee. If you made a reservation online, I wonder if it was through the same system that the DNR uses. If so, that would explain the 8.00 fee. Did you make your reservation online or did you call the KOA directly?
