Route & Stops from South Alabama to Sioux Falls, SD?

I have been planning on taking a trip to South Dakota, then over to Yellowstone and then down to the Grand Tetons for years, but the wildfires keep killing it. I am now planning on doing it next spring instead of fall. I need a route with good stops from South Alabama to Sioux Falls.

I really do not want to drive each day and I would like some nice stopovers preferable in COE or State Parks. But they will have to be big rig friendly and have full hookups. So private campgrounds would be the next option. Once I get to Sioux Falls I have a good idea of where I want to go and stay, but the first leg of the trip is wide open.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Didn't know where your origin will be, but I used Mobile.
Mobile - Memphis ( a bit over 340 miles) overnite in West Memphis at Tom Sawyers place

not at whole lot between Memphis and Kansas City

Great place in Iowa. Onawa, Iowa has On Your Way RV park at that exit and a state park across the I-29 beside the Missouri River. Sioux City has a city park with lot of history. A old riverboat that is free to walk in and photograph. It was retired several years ago and was used to pull log jams from the river. Park is right beside the Missouri

Thanks for the suggestion. I have the Lewis and Clark State Park put into my trip itinerary.

We stayed at On Your Way one night and thought it was nice. The people running the park were really friendly.

We are in northern Alabama right now, headed to eastern Iowa instead of western Iowa where you will end up. To the PP who says there isn’t a lot between Memphis and Kansas City, I recommend getting off the interstate in Missouri. Lakes and rivers abound. We are staying at Cuivre State Park. They do have full hookups in some sites. Head north in Missouri instead of west to travel along the Mississippi. Stop at Hannibal to enjoy Mark Twain stories. The “Avenue of the Saints” is a road that goes from St. Louis to St. Paul. Follow it through Missouri into Iowa. Stop at the historic river town of Betonsport on the Iowa side of the Des Moines river. When you hit I-80, head west or choose to take historic US 30 across Iowa. Much more scenic.

If taking I-90 west from Sioux Falls, I highly suggest Ft. Thompson on the Missouri River. Its just north of Chamberlain on the interstate at the river. COE campground called "Left Tailrace COE campground" Its in the middle of the river, below the Big Bend dam.

Not sure where in Alabama you will start from, but if going to Nashville and then to Paducah, I cross Illinois at Marion/Carbondale/Murphysboro, and take state 3 up to Chester to cross the river, then north and skirt the outside of St Louis. There is a National Wildlife Refuge Campground at Crab Orchard Lake that is about a quarter mile off highway 13 east of Carbondale. Very nice area. At Chester stop and snoop around town, its the home of Popeye creater Segar, and they have statues all around town and a visitors center at the bridge with lots of info.

EDIT: I'm going to "un-suggest" Graham Cave as the campsites would be tight for your big rig. There are at least a couple of State Parks very close to I-70 crossing Missouri. Graham Cave SP at Danville about half way between St Louis and Columbia is one, and the other is Arrow Rock State Historic Site, which has a campground, at Arrow Rock, about 12 mi north of the interstate on state 41, it is right on the Missouri River. I have not been to Arrow Rock, cannot vouch for the size of sites.

Lots of places to camp north of KC. Only one I have stayed at was the Horseshoe Casino at Council Bluffs, but that is only because I was doing 500 mi trip legs and that was the perfect spot to stop and fuel up and stay the night and eat at the casino. Expensive however at $40 but good showers. Its just a big parking lot with power pedestals and faucets around the perimeter.

Oh if you take I-24 stop at Metropolis when crossing the Ohio River after Paducah, and visit the home of Superman. Ft Massac State Park is right next to town and the river and has camping, havent stayed but have visited the park, its nice.

Right now my route is taking me through Memphis, St. Louis, Kansas City and then up to Sioux Falls. I am looking the Outlet (Melvern) COE outside of Kansas City, the Lewis & Clark SP in Iowa and then on up to Sioux Falls. There are a few private RV parks between these stops.

I added the Left Tailrace, SD COE, but I need to check my mileage. I like to drive around 200 miles per day. For some reason there has not been any reviews on the RVParkReview website in 2018.

Campendium has one review this year for Left Tailrace. https://www.campendium.com/left-tailrace

The Left Tailrace park is newer, having replaced a small, now abandon campground on the north shore, on Crow Reservation land.

There is also a private campground on the west shore of the river, right at Chamberlain https://arrowwoodcedarshore.com/

and another one on the east shore right in town, American Creek Campground

Double check to make sure your campgrounds will be open in the spring!
