Smile RV Camping on Long Island, NY

Hi all,

We're planning on traveling to the east coast this Fall and spending Thanksgiving with the family in Port Jefferson on Long Island. I've been searching for RV parks, but have come up empty handed. The only spots I saw we're in state or county parks, many of which close in late October. We have a 45' coach, and could boon-dock if we had to. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jay

Long Island ??
I moved from Greenport on Long Island about 8 years ago, and there was a park in Greenport, I think owned by the village, you might call the Village of Greenport on the East End. Not sure if they take transients yet, worth a try.

The only place I know of is Liberty Harbor on the Jersey side. We have camped there on two occasions and it worked out great.

Strike that, for some reason I read that as Manhattan....not Long Island. Good luck.

My iphone AllStays app is showing 3 walmarts around Port Jeff that allow parking if you ask:
- South Setauket
- Centerreach
- Middle Island

Depending on where you are coming from, and if you don't need the sleeping space, it may make sense to leave the coach in a campground and take the toad in to LON-GUY-LAND (as the locals pronounce it).

Remember in NY it is critical that you drive on the Expressways and NOT the Parkways as the clearance is too low.

I have a farm in NJ about 2.5 hours west of Port Jefferson where you could store the coach. It may be too far, but I wanted to give you that option.

As a former Long Islander, Greenport, I know of no other place except my earlier suggestion. The one other possibility that I can think of is this : If you are only visiting on day, and returning to CT. next day, there is a Ferry from Orient to New London Ct, on the eastern tip of L.I. about 25 miles east of Port Jeff. If you planned to return the next day and make a reservation, and just happen to miss the last ferry back from Orient, you would need to spend the night in ferry parking lot with trucks who are waiting to get the next day ferry. It is gorgeous there, and it might work for one night.

I was looking into going to Long Island also. I was told that because of the propane tank that you can't use a tunnel and have to use the upper level of the George Washington bridge which puts you more north.

Both the Holland and Lincoln tunnels leave you on the streets of Manhattan so propane or no propane you don't want to consider the tunnel option.

Your bridge options are:
- Tappen Zee - WAY north of the city
- George Washington Upper deck - keeps you on expressways which lead to the LIE (long island expressway)
- Verranzano - southern route that makes you go through Staten Island. Then take the BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expressway) to the LIE

Traffic wise you can get screwed any way you go!

Watch out for the BQE, I've seen better roads in Iraq, looked like it was shelled last time I used it.
