We just got back from 2 weeks in the Smoky's. One week on the Northern side (Elkmont and Gatlinburg) and one week on the Southern side. On the southern side we stayed at Smokemont campground inside the national park. Just Northeast of Cherokee on Big Cove Road there were a few large campgrounds. One of the easiest waterfalls to get to is Mingo Falls about 3-4 miles up Big Cove Road. There about 160 wooden stairs to view the falls.

The Casino in Cherokee is very nice.... Love the free park....Their doing some construction, so some of the grounds are off limits. They might be done with most of it by the time you visit. In the park by the river there were a patch of bamboo trees that seemed out of place.....??? kind of strange...(Oconaluftee Island Park)

At Mingus Mill near the park visitor center is kind of cool. While we were on the northern side we eat lunch a few times at Chimney Rocks picnic area. Its a very popular place were most of the picnic tables have their own parking place....It gets filled up by noon time, so to get a good table by the river you need to get there by 10am.

Flaming Arrow Campground on the right just before Cherokee on US 441. We enjoyed the park with a nice view. The owners are very nice too.
If you are looking for a cool place as in almost cold, you better shop inside or enter a cave along the way.
There are many many beautiful and fun places near Cherokee.

We like the Holiday Campground out past the casino on Hwy 19

Nice big level sites on the creek if you reserve on plenty in the open.

Hi offshore,

Consider Cherokee / Great Smokies KOA | Camping in North Carolina | KOA Campgrounds . It is a very nice CG. On a shallow river (kids can play). There is a lot to do at the CG. I would stay there again.
