RV Park near Wasatch Mountains, Salt Lake City

We plan on hiking the canyons and mountains of the Wasatch Front this June. I'm having a hell of a time finding a RV Park near the mountains. We do need full hook ups for our 40ft Class A. The closest parks I have found so far are the KOA in Salt Lake and Mountain Shadow RV in Draper.

Are there other parks closer to the mountain range, or will we have to drive rather long distance every day to get to the trail heads?

Any advice is very much welcome.

Thank you for the suggestion but we're looking for something further south. The areas we plan to hike are Mill Creek, Big Cottonwood, Little Cottonwood and as far south as Spanish Fork.

I found these:

East Bay RV - Springville

KOA - Springville

Lakeside RV - Provo

Would staying in Heber City help? I'm not sure of where those trailhead are.

Twogypsies, now we're too far south:-) The ideal RV Park would be somewhere along the 215 just south east of Salt Lake. I think were stuck with the Salt Lake KOA and Mountain Shadow in Draper.

Thanks for making the effort though. This is a great community.

We stayed at lakeside last year. Was a great little park. Nice pool and they had food trucks there on the weekend nights

We stayed at Mountain Shadow. It was good. Getting on I 15 and then 215 will get you to the mountains quite quickly. Exit 6 if you are heading to the big or little cottonwoods.

I have stayed at the KA and Mountain Shadows several times.

My only complaint with Mountain Shadows is that the grass sprinkles come on at night and coat your rig with hard water...I'm still trying to get the water marks off my coach from last summer.

KOA uses hoses with sprinkler heads and doesn't get your coach water marked.

There is a Camping World next to Mountain Shadows and you may want to call them and inquire about other local campgrounds.

There is another one called Pony Express just north of the KOA a bit. It would on,y cost you 5 minutes more time. Wide open, big sites, but I would think it pretty noisy. The KOA is actually quite nice. It is right on the light rail line (Trax) and it is easy to get to various places in the city. I don’t know of any campground off of the east 215. Note that SLC is the easiest city I have ever been in for getting around. The highways have lots of lanes and seldom are too backed up except for rush hour (6:30-8:00, 4-6 or so). Of course I am comparing it to Boston, LA, and Chicago, among others. Have fun hiking. Those are great trails.

I have stayed at Lakeside and Utah state park, they are right beside each other. The state park takes reservations.

Well, I think you’ll be fine with the KOA. There doesn’t seem to be anything closer, but as UTTransplant says, Salt Lake is an easy city, and a real nice one to boot. I’m sure you’ll enjoy the stay, the more so because the KOA is just right up the street from the Red Iguana, a truly fine Mexican place.

Thank you everybody. We will split our time between the KOA in Salt Lake and the Mountain Shadow in Draper. They seem to be our best options.

The Red Iguana sounds like a must - Good Mexican food is always welcome!!
