We are currently in New England after driving here from California. We have a 38 ft 5th wheel. Any suggestions on staying near NYC....know we can't camp too close, and don't want to stay at the Liberty park in the city. What about the KOA in Newburgh north of the city? Seems like this is the closest place that would be open. Says they are 70 miles north. Would it be good to camp there then drive in closer in our truck and take a train in to the city? If so, from where? Will be exploring the Hudson River Valley too. Thanks!

Hello..welcome to NY. We are former NYers and lived in that area. KOA is nice campground. take truck across the Newburgh-Beacon bridge to either Beacon or go a little further north to Poughkeepsie and catch the train to NY. Beacon is closer and probably the best bet. There is also a rv park off of route 9 in Croton-on-Hudson, small and don't know if open at this time of the year. enjoy the Hudson river valley. great place.

The Newburgh KOA is about as nice a CG as you will find in this area. We live about 15 mins. away and will occasionally weekend there. If you try to get weekend reservations, you may find it booked this month due to leaf peepers and Apple Pickers coming out from the city and NJ. Metro north runs along the east shore of the Hudson all the way into Grand Central station. It's a scenic train ride and it will bring you right into the center of the city. I believe the CG offers tours into NYC as well. Enjoy! This is a great time of year to explore our area! Other local attractions include the Roosevelt & Vandebilt Mansions, the Culinary Institute, the Walkway Bridge, Bear Mtn. State Park.... Just to name a few!

We were just at the KOA Newburgh in September. Very nice people, but they only do tours if they have 14 people or more. The lady that previously worked the tours says they haven't had enough people for tours in a long time. The campground is pretty full on the weekends, a lot of local people come to escape the city. We did drive to Beacon and took the train, it takes 1 and 1/2 hours to reach grand central, but enjoyable ride. Be cautious of the people waiting outside grand central to sell you bus tours, they will sell you more than you need. But bus tours are ok, just do not buy more than you will need. They also have a lady that can walk your dogs, while in the city, if you travel with 4 legged children as we do, and the proceeds go to kids with cancer! Hope this information is helpful.

If you are exploring the Hudson Valley, make sure you try to get a reservation at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. American Bounty, Bocuse, Cucina - they are all great.

A great day is the Vanderbilt Mansion, the FDR estate (if they are open due to the government shutdown!) and then the CIA for dinner.
