Sacramento to Pismo Beach. Best highway?
We traveling that way in mid November.
Driving a 40’ with toad. Is 101 a safe , easy route? Sure don’t want a repeat of hiway 128!
Will be coming south on i5 from B.C.

I'm confused (Nothing new).
Are you going from B.C. straight to Pismo Beach or are you going to Sacramento and then going to Pismo Beach?

Sacramento to Pismo Beach. Best hiway?
I’ve driven to Pismo many times from the Bay Area. You will have no problems on 101. Smooth sailing, except for CA traffic of course!
There is a 6% grade about 2 miles long just before you get to San Luis Obispo (SLO), but it isn’t bad and there is usually not much traffic.
You will have a great time! Pismo is one of our favorite places to visit! If you have time, we love the Great American Melodrama in Oceano, the Thursday Farmers Market in SLO, Firestone Grill in SLO, and Zorro’s in Shell Beach (for great Mexican food).

I’ll be heading south on I5 to Sacramento area then either west 505 and 101 south or continue south on I5 and another route west.
41 or 46 look like secondary routes. Not sure I’d want to gamble on them.

Thanks for the tips! We keep hearing how nice it is. Time to scratch it off the list!

From Sac to PB, I5 to 41 to 101. We've driven that many times, from San Luis Obispo to Sac and back, staying at Sac-West..
Or , I5 to 269 to Avenal to 33 to 41, to 101 shaves a few miles off it.
Either way, you miss the Bay area.

Don't go west on 505 and then 101. Been there, done that. Couldn't pay me to do it again.
As SLOweather said go down I 5 to 41 to 101. We live in Fresno California and all the natives here take 41 to 101.

If you like clam chowder you can't go wrong by stopping in at Splash Cafe - they make the best clam chowder in California!

Definitely avoid 80/101 and go I5 to 42 to 101.

There is no 42. I believe he made an error.

I5 to Hwy 41 in Fresno. 41 to 46 to 101 and turn left. Its a slow winding road on 41 to Atascadero. 46 takes you into Paso Robles and is a much nicer road.

Currently, no. The fires are further south in the Sylmar area.
I would also suggest the 46 to Paso Robles, then south on the 101 to Pismo. Very easy drive.
