San Diego to Portland

Planning our trip to Portland, Or. Leaving on June 27th for 2 weeks. This is what we have planned so far.

First 2 stops will be a little longer than I really like but so be it.
1. KOA in Los Banos 1 night
2. Mt Shasta City - KOA 2 nights
3. Medford, OR KOA -1 night
4. Eugene, OR Deerwood RV Park - 2 or 3 nights)
5. This is what we haven't figured out so far, so looking for some recommendations in Portland or Mt Hood Area.

When we leave Portland Area to come home we are thinking about going to Bend on our way back home.

Bend will be a nice drive, but I would look at returning back down the Oregon Coast and hitting I 5 at Sacramento.

The Eastern Sierra along US 395 from the Cal/Nevada line south to Inyokern is as beautiful as anywhere IMO.

I would skip the Medford KOA and stay at Valley of the Rogue State Park. Full hookup $28 easy access from I5. A Really nice park right on the river. We stay there quite often.

Just west of Mt Hood in Welches, is Mount Hood RV Village. At one time it was a very nice RV park but I have not been there in a couple years. West of Portland on the coast range is LL Stub Stewart State Park. A fairly new park but also a nice state park with large level sites.
Have a safe trip and enjoy.

Have our route and stops planned to Portland BUT now looking at our return.

This is what we are thinking.

Ok, trying to plan our return trip. DW wants to go down the 101 but this is our first long trip in our new MH and pulling a toad so a little concern about this route.

Albany, OR (on the 5) to Newport, OR (coast) is on hwy 20. (62 miles)
Newport to Crescent City (236 Miles) and then to Grants Pass on ( 62 miles) Hwy 199, then head south on the 5. Some people have said that the 20 is ok and that stretch on 101 is ok, but haven't found any comments on Hwy 199
Total distance for the above is 381 miles.

If we take that route, any suggestion on places to stay?

Comments or thoughts welcome!!!

Highway 199 is a good road surface but has a few miles of very sharp curves. If time allows you can overnight at Lone Mountain RV park in O'Brien Oregon about 5 miles into Oregon on Hwy 199. Pretty new and nice park. RV Site Rates, Campground Rates, Camp Site Rates, Tipi Rates, Cabin Rates I think it is passport America if you have that program. If you eat dinners out across 199 from the park is McGrews and they serve excellent dinners. A real good stop is Great Cats World Park just at the south edge of Cave Junction. Great Cats World Park - Cave Junction - Reviews of Great Cats World Park - TripAdvisor Plenty of space to park the RV without unhooking the tow car.

If you like caves the Oregon Caves National Monument is east of Cave Junction but you'd need to leave your RV at the visitor center and drive your tow car to the caves. In Grants Pass are jet boats on the rogue river. Lots of fun on those.

Our trip so far.

Left San Diego area on Sat and first stop was KOA in Los Banos. Right off the 5 and 389 miles of HOT driving so the pool was nice and ok for a overnight stay and shower. All the grass was dead due to the drought and not able to water. Very dusty.

Again, another long drive, 342 miles. Sun and Monday spent at KOA in Mt shasta. Again, very dusty and grass dead but nice store and pool. Bathrooms and showers clean..

Tuesday, KOA Medford, OR. Green grass and had a nice shady spot for the night.

Wednesday, today and tomorrow. We are staying 2 nights here in Eugene, OR at Deerwood RV resort and what a beautiful place to stay. Lots of green grass and shade. No pool or store but store very close by. Deerwoodrvpark.com would highly recommmend this place.

Had some towing problems but will talk about it late. Hwy 5 in OR is very nice compared to CA.

More later.

You would have no problem returning on 101. It's not to be confused with Hwy 1.

Still thinking about our return trip. We will be leaving the Portland, Eugene area from the 5 and looking at roads from 5 to the 101.

Fyi, cutting across to Sacramento from north of Frisco 101 is not good (narrow lanes, crowded with crazy drivers cutting you off, traffic, lots of road construction making your GPS irrelevant and 20.00 tolls) DO NOT USE I5 SOUTH OF SACRAMENTO THE ROAD WILL DESTROY YOUR RIG. If you can cut over at Redding from 101 (fyi grades) and 99 south of Sacramento is very good now.

Very beautiful that route in my TV only. Many 6% grades, too much for my rig.
