We are looking at staying in Dorst Creek cg.inside Sequioa NP. I know nothing about the place just what I have seen and read on the park service website. The roads up to and inside the park with a 38'mh might be a game changer for me. I have no problem staying in a campground close by and commuting with toad to see the park if that is what you folks who have been there advise. I appreciate all the info and advise I have recieved Thanks.

If this is your first time visiting SF you might want to use a conducted tour. The KOA at Petaluma, Ca,( just north of SF ) conducts a wonderful guided tour from the campground. We did this in 2012.

We stayed at Santa Rose fairgrounds and drove to the Larkspur Ferry on the north side of the bay. The ferry is a short pleasant ride past Alcatraz and lets you off near Fisherman's Wharf at the Ferry Landing.

From there we had made reservations for the small group tour company to meet us at the ferry landing. They use small vans, had excellent tour guides and made for a very pleasant full-day tour. They gave us ample time to spend at the Japanese Garden, a lunch break in Sausalito, the Golden Gate bridge and other top places. We'd highly recommend it.

https://www.sanfranshuttletours.com/

They dropped us off again at the Ferry Landing for the ferry ride back to our car.

We'd recommend some kind of tour of the city to get your bearings. Then you can return on your own for additional time.

Another place to stay is the Napa Valley Expo. Then you can do some winery tours, also.

Looks like you are planning to be at the north end of Sequoia, so I would just take the 198 out to the 180 to 99 north. Then I would stay on 99 N to 152 west. Then it depends upon where you want to stay. If you decide to try Pacifica, then head over to HWY1, if you decide on the north bay, then we generally take 101 to 880 to 580.

We have stayed at the Petaluma KOA. It's nice, but a bit out of town for strictly SF sightseeing.

Strongly suggest that you download the app called 'Mountain Directory'. Paraphrased it states that there are 3 roads going into the SNP area. Of them. 180 is the best. It has a very steady 18 mile 6% grade.

A couple of years ago we stayed at Solano County Fairgrounds RV Park in Vallejo. It ain't nothing to write home about, but it's cheap. We were there in mid-September and were the only RV in the park. As we were leaving, met another motorhome coming in.

We drove the toad into SF a couple of times.

Pretty good advice. I'll bet it took some time to make that list. Very nice of you.

They cater to long-term residents and have very few, and very expensive overnight spots.

Another park that prefers the long-term residents. I'm not sure they have ANY overnight spots available.

Yet another park that prefers the long-term resident. They do have a few overnight spots but you're about 75 miles from San Francisco.

This is a Thousand Trails park, but they do offer some non-member spots on an as-available basis. Non-members can expect to pay around $50 per night for a rustic setting, with water, mostly adequate electric, and no sewer. And you're still over 75 miles from San Francisco.

This is across the road from the Thousand Trails park and the last time we drove through it there were no overnight spots available - it's full of long-term residents.

Same as Oak Dell - across the road from Thousand Trails and full of long-term residents.

Another long-term park although they say they have a few overnight spots available. Almost 100 miles from SF.

Decent number of overnight spots, but over 100 miles from SF.

The vineyard in Vacaville is a nice park. Not a horrible drive to the City.
Ashton Kutcher and his wife even stayed there in there mh. Go for the new section if possible. And make reservations as soon as you can as California gets busy.

August is summer for San Francisco and often has the hottest weather of the year. Alcatraz tours will be sold out well in advance, so make sure you book early if you want to go there. Skip Pier 39. It's all tourists and gift shops. The exception is the Musee Mechanique (http://www.museemechanique.org/) with free admission. If you have kids (and maybe even of you don't) The Exploratorium (http://www.exploratorium.edu/) on Pier 15 is worth considering.

Also, remember that cable cars are not trolleys (those are streetcars). That's one way we can tell who is a tourist and who lives here.
