September trip to the New England states.

Planning a trip to the north east for the first time in our 35' MH towing a Wrangler. We will have 4-5 weeks. We are coming from Illinois. Would appreciate any info on roads, places to see as well as avoid. Thanks!

If you're planning on leaf-peeping, I'd recommend making reservations. I don't know about campgrounds, but last minute motel rooms during peak foliage don't exist. Vermont and New Hampshire are beautiful that time of year, with foliage peaking in late September and early October, depending on where you are. I prefer the smaller towns.

Not much to avoid other than trying to drive north on a Friday evening or south on Sunday afternoon during peak season.

If you're looking for outlets, there are lots around- Kittery, ME, North Conway, NH, to name a few. No trip to Maine is complete without a trip to LLBean in Freeport. There's a nice campground near there right on the coast called Recompense- just water and electric hookups, but we love it.

Good luck!

Walt

Thanks Walt. If leaves are in color that's great but more interested in seeing countryside and historical areas. Not sure if it's best to have 2-3 base camps and travel in the Jeep to see things

Depending of exact timing, campgrounds start to close down in the fall usually right after the fall leaves drop.

So much to see up there from the Atlantic Ocean to the mountains. We usually contact the states tourism department and ask that they send brochures for their attractions. Then Google "thing to do in ??? state" and pick from there.

We made that trip you are thinking about last year. We left Kentucky early September and traveled through Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York before crossing into Montreal and then east to Nova Scotia, then back through Maine, Vermont and home early November. We normally hit a spot we like, drive around spending 3 to 5 days exploring, then pick up and move on to the next exciting adventure.

Good luck, and have fun. So much to see, so much to do, so many people to meet!

I would suggest a visit to Acadia national park and bar harbor Maine. Beautiful driving tours in the park and lobster stands everywhere! They also have the best blueberry ice cream. Plenty of campgrounds outside the park but they do fill up that time of year. You probably will not fit inside the park because of your length. New hampshire had the best foliage when we were there in October last year. Cog railway or drive yourself to the top of mt. Washington for fabulous views and a bit of history. We also went to Newport, Rhode Island to see the mansions. Very impressive. And last but not least, a visit to Yankee Candle in Massachusetts is a very unique experience even if you are a guy who doesn't like to shop!
We also went to kennebunkport and saw the Bush compound. You can drive by it but no tours. Great driving tour around town.
Have fun.
