Shoutout for N Rim and Jacob Lake store & cafe.

For most the North Rim is half a day further than the south. Unlike the South Rim which has 10 lanes into it, the north has one. No shuttle buses, no crowds ...other than the hundreds of mule deer at dusk. Being 1000’ higher (8000’), the north has real trees but snow closes it in October.

Jacob Lake is in the middle of nowhere so a prime location for a rip-off BUT the family run motel-cafe-store is NOT and the food is good ...rare in this day and age. We like the USFS CG there for $20 ($10 with the old fart pass) but they do have a FHU CG.

I've always felt those who haven't seen the Grand Canyon should go to the South Rim first because you can view a lot more of the Canyon and there are more activities.

However, after the first time definitely visit the North Rim. It's so quiet and relaxing - just the opposite of the South Rim.

Agreed that DeMotte national forest campground is awesome if that's where you stayed. Just beyond it toward the park is a gravel road that leads to fantastic boondocking spots. Also, the North Rim has a campground. We've stayed at all three.

We haven't been to the South Rim in decades, in fact I don't think I ever took the wife and kids down there. It was busy but it certainly didn't have a 10 lane highway. We do the North Rim and have stayed at Jacob Lake a couple of times and once in the park cg. In the National Forest on the way in there are excellent boondocking areas too.

I remember stopping there, Jacob's Lake in the 90's with my son on a relocation trip to Cali for the Summer - June and 4"'s of Snow - He has never forgotten it - and it was great then as it is Now, and the People were Great.

Good note - We have generally still been able to get into the North rim at Thanksgiving - Lucky -

IMHO - the fewer people who go the better it is - But - still it is only fair to let people know about it - BUT Like Twogypsies says Go to the South Rim - easier and keeps the crowds lower at the North Rim - -

That is one of the most magnificent photos I've seen of the Grand Canyon! Do you happen to recall at what viewpoint it was taken? We love the North Rim, but none of my pics look like that!

We have some great photos taken at the North Rim but for both Rims you have to catch the right lighting and clouds really help a picture.

Agreed! Clouds can add such great drama to photos! Sometimes they even make the photo, and those big western skies sure help!

We spent this past weekend at Jacob Lake Recreation Area NFSCG and really enjoyed it. The perfect weather didn't hurt, either. The North Rim is spectacular and well worth the effort as is Hwy 89a. Last Monday, the South Rim was practically deserted and we had a great day there. Just finished up at Zion today and plan to do Bryce Canyon Thursday.
