Shut down effect on Boondocking

Has anyone had to deal with land and campground closures due the Gov. Shutdown?

My Wife and I are planning a trip for our anniversary and are hoping we will be able to dry camp near the Grand Canyon just to get away, Not too sure what's open or closed.

I seen some articles about people removing the orange cones and just going in to the "closed" National Parks. deSanford

Camping anywhere inside the GC park boundaries is not allowed at this time. The south entrance to the south rim is closed just north of Tusyan. I assume the east entrance to the south rim is also closed.

Same with the north rim. There are areas you can boondock but you won't make it to see the canyon without hiring a helicopter tour. Other alternatives is to visit the west grand canyon which is on indian land and thus not part of the national park.

Another choice would be to camp around the Williams area. Lots of back roads in the woods. Williams is a fun town, on route 66. Bearizona is well worth the visit as is the deer farm, numerous lakes etc. There are nice RV parks around Williams as well if you don't wish to boondock.

Here is some information about the effect of the park shutdown on the Grand Canyon Train.

Today we tried to get into Lake Mead RV Village near Bolder City, Nevada. Told their closed because of the Federal thing. Large RV park 115 sites, 4 W's from Woodall's. Shame its a nice place.
I really see no reason for the closure of National Parks, Monuments and the "viewing" of things like the Grand Canyon, WWII memorial or Mt. Rushmore. Some folks have been kicked out of their homes located on leased federal land. [ Moderator Edit ]

We've been planning our trip across the country for years now. We're camped in Rapid City at the moment and headed to Mt Rushmore today. Just try and stop us from seeing it!!

Thanks Chuck, Great info source, I'll bookmark that site. I'm not sure if they are allowing outside the park camping, But I can't see how they can close overflow areas if they're not on the Federal Land.

Thanks everyone for your help in this... I am weighing other options for our trip. I'd hate to drive for miles only to have to turn around... But we'll find somewhere cool to go for sure. Best of luck to you all!
