Silver City New Mexico campgrounds
Looking for input about campgrounds around Silver City. Has anyone stayed in the Silver City area?
One of our concerns is regarding venemous critters in the campgrounds. Are they only a problem in the bush? Maybe we're just too jumpy.

There are creatures you don't want to take home with you in NM. But that said I have been camping in our state for 50 years and have yet to have a bad experience w/said creatures. If you stay in campgrounds you are even less likely to have a problem. There are rattlesnakes in NM but also Pa. and other states. Scorpions and such are not a problem unless you might like to go around the wilderness turning rocks over.
Southwest NM (Silver City) is in an extreme drought condition. Just this week a fire destroyed some homes in that area and there are wind driven fires a plenty as we are in the spring windy season. Just a heads up on where you park but come and enjoy our state.

Thanks for your help. I guess we've watched too many movies which make it look a rattlesnake is under every bush.
In our few trips out west I saw a rattlesnake only once at a conference center near Mesa Az. Are black widow spiders much trouble near towns?

We lived in El Paso for 5 years (many years ago).
We had one Black Widow over the sink. Never found one (spider) in the bed???  In Hotels / Motels / Campgrounds we never met a cricker, we did not like!

Several years ago we stayed at the Rose Valley RV Ranch ( Official web site and home page for Rose Valley RV Ranch, the newest and best RV facility in Grant County.) for about a week, which we very much enjoyed. The sites were fairly spacious and offered good privacy. We stayed in a back-in site, if I remember correctly it was Site #32, which I thought was nicer than the pull-thru's. We would definitely stay there again when we're in the area.
We didn't run into any creatures during our stay.

We had intended to stay near Silver City but could not find a nice place to stay...
So we just drove straight to City of Rocks Start Park. Great place and only $14 for hookups!!

KOA in Silver City is nice. Like most KOA's, a bit overpriced. Park is quiet and spaces are away from the road by a good distance.

Off the subject but if you are staying in Silver City take the time to drive up to Pinos Altos for dinner. One of the best restaurants i have ever eaten in. I can't remember the name but it is the only nice restaurant in town.

Gila Wilderness
If you are in that area, a side trip is to Doc Campbell's Outpost, Gila Cliff Dwellings, and Gila Hot Springs Ranch, 40 miles to the NW. It is probably a little more rustic than some of the city places, but might be some interest. It is at the end of the road into the Gila Wilderness. There are web sites.

I second City of Rocks as a great place to stay...totally surreal surroundings and definitely worth seeing. Only $14/night for electric/water (or $4/night with the NM Camping Pass) or $10/night for non-hook-up camping right inthe rocks. It's ~30 miles to Slver City from here. We did the drive yesterday and also popped up to Pinos Altos (another great visit!). By the way the Buckhorn Saloon has "open mike night" in the Opera House every Mon evening....artists, music...you name it. Go for dinner and a show!
