South Carlsbad Beach - how to get in - advice?

Hi Folks: we are taking our first long journey in our RV. We are going from Tucson to S. Carlsbad Beach Campground. I am a bit nervous, but especially considering the Google Maps. It shows (and the website for the campground states) that you can not go straight into the campground - and must go up the road then make a u-turn. My rig is not U-turn friendly, especially if I have a dolly on it. Is there a better way to get in? Any other advice for my route (I am also worried about the mountains and traffic).

Thanks!

Hey Doc, I'm just curious how you even got reservations at Carlsbad? Everytime I tried, it was booked up for a year in advance.

They only take reservations 6 months advance so right now you are looking at August 14 as the next spots available. We have gone there during the week and got in without reservations during the off season. I don't remember any U-turn, but that may have been because we came from the north, just pass it up and make your turn where you are comfortable if that happens. No rush if you have reservations.

Yeah for the weekends if you are not on the phone at 8am and be one of the lucky ones the be answered, they will fill up within a half hour max. We just don't plan on being there on a weekend anyway, too many people.
