South Carolina and Georgia
Still planning our trip to the south eastern states. Looking at Charleston, SC and Savannah, Georgia. They are both within a 2 hour radius. Wondering if it is worth stopping and staying at both towns or are they both similar and much alike? Also the days we were planning on staying in Charleston in April they will be holding a boat race regatta festival. Would that be a good time to stay or a time to avoid?
Thanks in advance for any comments, opinions, suggestions.

Both places are great to visit. Charleston has the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier display that you can go on and walk around at your own pace. The Market downtown is pretty neat. There's all sorts of stuff to see. Savannah is fun, you can get on a trolley bus that stops at different locations, stay around as long as you like and catch the next trolley.Cost of this is well worth it not that much to get drove around town and brought back to where you started. There are a lot of parks through out the city all with historic value. I don't think you will be disappointed in either. Jim

Charleston route 17 in the city is tight 4 lane streets. lots of truck traffic. ( To be expected for a OLD style City) I am at Edisto Beach State Park this month.
I hope to visit Savannah next winter.

We did exactly that trip last year...
Savannah was our favorite of the two and the trolley trips are the best way to get around... those parks are wonderful for the guys to just to sit and relax while the women go see yet ANOTHER and ANOTHER and yet ANOTHER shop
Part of the issue may have been that we stayed in a NICE rv park in Savannah and one that was hard to get in and out of near Charleston...
Paula Deans restaurant was a MONSTROUS let down, none of the group liked it.

While there are some similarities they are definitely two different cities with unique histories, sites and things to do. We make at least one trip a year and catch both cities. If you have time try and do both you won't regret it.

Both are great. Architecture is completely different. Sherman marched through GA to the sea. When he arrived in Savannah the city fathers payed MILLIONS to not burn the town. They suggested he go to Charleston and burn that sea coast town. He did. Thus Savannah is pre civil war architecture and Charleston is post civil war.

Two great cities, very different as noted, well worth
doing both if you are able. I like Charleston better, and
if you could only do one, that would be my suggestion.

Have been to one, not the other (need to visit) completly different. Both culture and politics are different, landscape is not all that much alike either. I'm curently in the Darien, GA area (About 1 hr closer to Flordia than Savannah. and enjoying the lack of SNOW. (We have gotten a whole lot of LIQUID snow though,, that's pre-melted (RAIN).

We stayed at Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort and liked it...
Two negatives -
they wouldn't reserve a specific site, you get there, ride around in a go cart to find a spot, Strange, but nice park...
Couple with us stayed on the water - NICE spot, but they brought home some water rats !!!! Glad we stayed in the interior

Definitely stop in both cities. So much to do in each. We stay at Mt. Pleasant/Charleston KOA as it's out of the city, but convenient to go in and tour. A must stop is Jestine's Kitchen in Charleston, but go after the lunch rush as the line goes out the door and down the street.

We were taught he did not burn Savannah because he (Sherman) sent a telegram to President Lincoln saying, I beg to present to you, Mr. President, the city of Savannah. I never heard the bribery story before. After years of war, where did the money come from?
