There are tunnels on 16A. Know where the tunnels are if you go on that route. YOu won't fit through the tunnels..............other than the tunnels 16A is okay.....a little steep in places.

We stayed at Beaver Lake campground and were very happy with it. Don't try to drive the Needles Highway while towing!

I retired as a 9-1-1 Emergency Operator in Rapid City and the other people that said avoid the Needles Highway and some of the tunnels are right on the mark!

It's unbelievable, the number of campers/trailers/motorhomes that have been stuck - blocking the roads for HOURS until a tow truck operator could assist with maneuvering them out of there.

Call the Parks Department and they will give you all the information you need!! Their Rapid City phone number is: 605.394.2391

There's an abundance of beautifully situated parks in the Black Hills area and if you're going to Custer State Park, there are several campgrounds/parks in the Custer/Hill City areas. Have fun! It's amazingly beautiful there!!!

My Black Hills favorite is Rafter J Bar Ranch campground in Hill City. If you're going to the north end, Spearfish City Campground is pretty nice.

There are a lot of nice RV parks in the hills, but we're partial to the Rafter J Bar. It's central to everything you'll want to see in the hills. Turn right out of the park and you're headed to the Crazy Horse monument, the city of Custer, Wind Cave and more. Straight up the mountain in front of the park and you'll end up at Mt. Rushmore, Keystone, one of the entrances to Custer State Park, the needles highway and more little side roads than you'll be able to explore in one trip. Head left out of the park and you'll be in Hill City with all of it's shops and the 1880s steam train (which you can ride up to Keystone and back) or a day trip to Spearfish canyon or even Deadwood.

We'll be spending another couple of weeks there late August or September of this year. It's one of our favorite areas in which to spend time.

We camped at Beaver Lake Campground very friendly staff and owner.Like others have said do not bring your rv on Needles Hwy. or Iron Mtn. Rd.

Do the wildlife loop in Custer SP.

Thanks.tb

If you want FH, it is going to be in that range. There are many electric only and no hookup spots for much less. Rafter J and KOA are about the most expensive. It used to be that you could get some free nights at Hart Ranch for listening to their sales pitch, if you're in to that sort of thing.

Try Custer State Park. Very reasonable and lovely spot to stay. You just need to book ahead. We stayed at Stockade Lake North and enjoyed it a lot.

There are also several National Forest campgrounds in the area.

We stayed at Rushmore Shadows Resort last summer. We are Coast2Coast so I do not know about rates. It is convenient to everything and was great
for us.

Try Hart Ranch. They have C-2-C or RPI discount, Plus Passport America. It is a working ranch, pretty spaces, Concrete Level pads. Near everything. Be sure to visit Deadwood and look at the Ladies in Pajamas in the 2nd floor windows. Ask why they are there? Take the time to see aS MUCH AS YOU CAN. a VERY Beautiful Area. safe travels.... ed
