G'morning Wizard: Just saw your post. There is a good spot on the Western edge of Homestead, Florida where we stayed coming off the Keys a few years ago which was VERY convenient. It happens to be a KOA, but the location would be a GREAT jumping off stop for your trip out the Keys. Hope this helps. Steve & Lynette

We sometimes stay at Southern Comfort. It's in Homestead, a couple of hundred yards off US 1. and right by the turnpike exit. Makes for a real easy start the next day for the keys.
I think the referenced KOA is Miami Everglades... it's no longer a KOA. It's a few miles from the turnpike

KoeH is correct, it is not longer a KOA, but is now called Miami Everglades. We've stayed there a couple of times and it is a nice, but pricey CG. Coming south on the Turnpike, exit at SW 186 St (Quail Roost Dr), drive west to SW 162 Ave and you're there. You can also access it easily from Krome Ave (SW 177 Ave-SR 987) The CG is located in the Redland section of Miami-Dade County and is a nice area...safe too, by Miami standards! I know, I was a LEO there for 32 years and lived several miles away from the place. Safe journey!

Wizard, my vote is for Larry and Penny Thompson Park in South Miami. It is a very nice campground. The sites are arranged in circles they call pods. Try to get a site on the outside of a pod as the ones on the inside are closer to your neighbor.
L & P Thompson is about 2 1/2 hours from Marathon (we stayed at Curry Hammock SP a week ago) and about 3 3/4 hours from Key West.
Enjoy your trip.
