South Fork, Creede or Lake City Colorado

We are planning to stay in this area for a week or so in mid to late September We have a 45 foot motorhome. Maybe do some beginner-type off-roading if there is a place to rent a Jeep. Looking for advice on where to stay in the area as a base from which to explore. We like upscale RV parks and particularly if it is convenient to stores and restaurants. We have been to Southwest CO, Breckenridge, Steamboat and the Rocky Mountain National Park vicinity so we thought we'd try the route 149 corridor. May I have your suggestions?

Check out Moutain Views in Creede. Nice upscale park but may not be as many stores etc around as you like. There is a nice class A only resort in Pagosa Springs that may fit your bill but don't know the name of it. The road to Lake City is doable with a 45 but you will work all the way. Also many of the locations in Lake City may be tight.

Thanks. Should I approach Lake City from the north or the south? The park in Pagosa Springs Is Wolf Creek Run. We know it and love it but are looking for a new experience.

we too will be staying in SW Colorado in mid sept. Since this was our first Colorado trip in our 43' coach we opted to stay close to Cortez which is Southwest of South Fork. Didn't want to do any big mountains this first trip out. But we can tour that area as day trips. Maybe next time we will tackle the bigger hills lol.

I've not been to Lake City from the north. Going up from Creede there are two passes to cross and quite a few 20 mph curves that you'll have to watch for on coming traffic so you can stay wide enough. There are places to pull off and let traffic by as I recall. We stayed in South Fork and did the Lake City run using the towed. Maybe someone else came chime in with better info.

Mesa Verde NP is close to Cortez and you can spend a couple of days doing that. Free if you have a senior pass. Some of the guided walks are quite cheap and some more $. It was too hot when we were there but we did the loop and got some great pictures of the cliff dwellings. Hovenweep is close too on the other side.

South Fork, Creede and Lake City are all close enough that you can stay in either and do day trips to the others. I live in South Fork but spend as much time in Creede and Lake City and Pagosa.
Mountain View is a good suggestion. Our one somewhat upscale park in South Fork is Fun Valley, but they close down in early Sept. South Fork has several other nice parks but none I'd call upscale. Most of the parks in Lake City are too small for a 45 footer.
The down grade from Slumgullion Pass (11,500) going north to Lake City is over 9%. Coming south from hwy 50 to Lake City is no issue, mostly flat or small rolling hills. But if you drive your rig from Lake City to Creede, then you're going up that 9% grade.
As far as Jeep rentals, yes they are available in all 3 towns. Lake City probably has the most Jeep rentals since they are closest to the Alpine Loop, a favorite of off roaders, Jeeps and ATV's. But I've had friends in SF rent a Jeep to follow me into the hills; and I know Creede has one rental outfit. You can also rent a side-by-side ATV in South Fork.
Most of the area campgrounds and some of the tourist businesses begin shutting down around mid Oct.

We stayed in South Fork and Creede but only drove thru Lake City. Mountain Views RV Resort/Park in Creede exceeded our expectations in every way. Rig size is not an issue. We liked it so much we bought a site for our summer home.

Another vote for Mountain Views in Creede. Have been there twice and look forward to another visit! And, as stated above, easy day trip to Lake City. There is also a reservoir between Creede and Lake City that is scenic - we got lucky and saw a blonde bear crossing the road right in front of us. In the same area (between Creede and Lake City) but on the east side of the road is an area where moose can be viewed. We did not see any, but our neighbors at Mountain View did. The office should be able to tell you the name of the road to turn east upon. It is not hard to spot as you can see the creek with willow from 149. Enjoy and let us know how it goes
