Stopped there in Oct on the way to Disneyworld. It's a dump now, just the same as it was the last time I stopped 10 years ago.

Interesting comments.. I was there in 1976 as I recall, and it was decent then.. Last year I snagged a cable TV show "10 biggest chrome shops in America" or something like that (Chrome is trucker for "Bling for my truck") and they were featured. Along with two or three other Chrome shops I have stopped at (Iowa 80 for example)

However.. They may have filmed the show long before,

Amazing I can remember bring there in 1976, I mean that was a LONG time ago.

Hey! It wasn't THAT long ago!
I remember stopping there back in the early 60's when I was a kid in the single digits, on our way to Florida to see my grandparents. Now THAT was a long time ago!!!
It was the Ultimate Tourist Trap then, not sure about now. We drove by it last year but did not stop.
Here's Wikipedia's take on it:

We are talking South of the Border in South Carolina, right?

I stoppped there to overnight in the campground before Myrtle Beach last Easter. Didn't experience any problems at all. Campground was relatively empty, no panhandlers or anything of the sort anywhere. Will stop again next time.

If nothing else, South of the Border is famous for it's hunderds of billboards, like the ones below, that have lined the sides of US 1 and I-95 since the 1950s (Many have now been removed). The only place I can think of that may have had more total billoards on America's highways is Harrah's Hotels & Casinos.

I have not been there since the 70s and only stopped then out of curiosity. At that time it was nothing more than a tourist trap with overpriced bad food, cheap souvenirs, a filthy parking lot and poor service. Haven't been back since. Hopefully it's improved by now.

Does this place have more billboards than "Wall Drugs" has along I-90 in SD?

Back in the late 80's, I remember seeing in the Chattanooga, TN area everything from billboards to welcome mats plastered with "Visit Ruby Falls" and "See Rock City". I don't think you could turn your head in any direction and NOT see one of those tourist attractions being advertised.

That would be saying something! Had my "free" water many times. Haven't been in a while but it was one of my daughters favorite places to stop on our numerous trips up that way. Three summers in a row and a few other times too. There is so much to see in the "general vicinity" of heading toward Custer and on to the Tetons and Yellowstone. You could spend a lifetime of vacations in SD, WY, MT and ID and still have lots to see.

Gonna have to check out SOTB next time I'm that way.
