We are looking for a campground for next winter in southern FL with easy access to Everglades National Park. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi Sandra,
Welcome to iRV2. Before I answer, how much are you willing to spend? I ask because there is nothing cheap meeting the requirements mentioned in your OP.

The farther one goes south in Florida, the higher the price of campsites.

I"m not interested in spending more than $1000 a month but with the price of diesel fuel, it may be better to spend it on a closer campground to the Everglades.

I've had a hard time finding much that's in the area let alone something affordable.

Thanks for the welcome!

Sandra,
On the West Side try:
1. Club Naples RV Resort, Naples 888-795-2780
2. Naples/Marco Island KOA 800-562-7734

On the East Side try:
1. Gator Park, Miami 800-559-2205
2. The Boardwalk MH & RV Community, Homestead
305-248-5462
3. Goldcoaster Mobile Home & RV Park, Florida City, 305-248-5462
4. Miami Everglades CG, Miami 800-917-4923
5. Larry & Penny Thompson CG, Miami 305-232-1049

I did not mention any possibilities in the Keys. There are several CGs in the Keys but they are not close to the Everglades.

Stay right in the Everglades at the National Park http://www.nps.gov/ever/ very reasonable.

We are in the keys right now like every year. However, this time we want to visit the Everglades and take the kids on a quick 1 hour or so airboat tour.

Questions:
Where is the national park? I assume it is dry camping or electric only?

Are there any air boat companies around there?

Scott,
The camping in Flamingo( you get there from Homestead) is dry camoing. Flamingo was pretty much wiped out a few yrs ago with the hurricanes and hasn't been rebuilt. They are working on proposals. Still, it's pretty neat to drive into that area and walk some of the trails. As far as airboats go, you and the kids would probably enjoy Everglades Gator farm which is on the road to Flamingo. It's prettty fun and educational and includes an airboat ride. The ride isn't the best, but they do get you out. A better ride , in my opinion , is on US 41 at Coopertown, just a few miles west of Crome Ave

Sandra,
Try Southern Comfort in Homestead or the Florida City run park

Thanks. Can you take 41 across w/a rig and toad? Or is it pretty rough road?

Are there any decent air boat rides along Alligator Alley?

We haven't been in over 15 years.

Scott,
We came across US 41 in early Nov. It's decent road, if a little boring in spots. Would recommend stopping at Shark Valley NPS visitor's center for tram tour out into the 'glades. There also are airboat tours along the way at the indian villages.

Camping at Flamingo has no hook-ups but there are restrooms. We stayed at the City of Florida City CG for a few days. Wasn't great, but full hook-ups and OK for a couple of days because of proximity to Everglades NP.

Update, on Monday we leave Key West. We are stopping at Monkey Jungle then to Coopertown along 41 for a quick airboat tour. Then another 80 miles to Pelican Lake between Naples and Marco Island. This is our first time in the area.

Haven't been before but, it looks beautiful. We got a lakefront site. BTW, this is Jetsmania's HQ South.

From there we don't have any plans until the supershow. We will see the West Coast a bit, take the kids to Busch Gardens and Universal, (Did Disney in November).
