Ok, here is my personal So side story. If you saw Grand Torino, that was was my wife's grandparents. They were such a oddity in the neighborhood but some residents took them under there wing and watched their back. Can remember being on the L and as it traveled into the SouthSide young teenagers assuming we were lost offering us assentance. While I totally understand the reality of the dangers of the Southside just had to say that we were always treated well.

OK All, here's my take on this entire conversation. I really could care less about the piddly a** arguments about McCormick Place and the number of shootings. You all can argue this somewhere else.

I could care less about Chicago (to me it's another world that I want no part of). I'm sure some people love it and more power to them.

All I wanted was recommendations on a park on the south side (meaning south, like before even getting to Chicago. Coming up 65 from Indy. Looking for a place before hitting I90. Then the plan is next morning (late) hitting 1-294 to Milwaukee.

That's all I wanted.

"Shooting In McCormick Place Hyatt's Lobby Brings Murder Charge" The body is just off camera to the right.

Yup, this is a wonderful place to spend the night. /sarcasm off

Not only is this not related to the OP topic, your quote doesn't even match the link! By your measure, maybe every place that has had a shooting should be avoided? There's not many places that have not.

Sorry to the OP for adding an OT post but some of the posts have been filled with misleading information.

I think that is the point. I90 (aka as the Dan Ryan) is NOT a good route. I would take 290 or better still 355 and AVOID driving through Chicago altogether. Once north of Chicago you can get on 94 and head on towards Milwaukee. Avoid rush hours.

Sorry, the link was modified after I posted it. Here is the correct link:

Yes, I think anyplace that routinely has 8 homicides and 68 shootings over any given week/weekend and where they randomly shoot at vehicles on I-90 should be avoided. Especially in an RV. Those are the facts.

We get it. You don't want to go to Chicago. Enjoy your freedom to do so. In the meantime allow the remainder of the people to have a conversation about helping someone else make an overnight stay decision.

The two crimes mentioned in River North occurred at 2am and 3am according to the news story you posted. I don't know many RV'ers that are wandering the city streets at 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. There are no campgrounds anywhere near River North so that is irrelevant to a discussion about helping people find a place to stay.

With respect, the original question asked about staying on the Southside of Chicago. That is not the same thing as saying you want to stay somewhere south of Chicago. That is how McCormick came up because it is a very legitimate overnight place to stay on the Southside of Chicago. We now know the location you meant but for those that are intimately familiar with the city, there was no way to know you meant something other than what you asked.

I294 around Chicago doesn't go into the city at all. Everyone complaining about this detail remember the OP isn't a local.

There is no camping south except a bit west on I80 near Joliet. My recommendation would be Illinois Beach State Park in Zion, right on IL/WI border. It's where I stay when in the area.

Going north, I like to avoid Milwaukee too so take i90 instead of i94. If that, overnight in Belvedere Walmart. You could even go i74 from Indiana to I39 and miss everything.

abrasv, what do you use for a navigation device? In terms of selecting the route across Chicago all the advice is great but in the end the only thing that really matters is the specific traffic at the time you want to drive. A single wreck can throw the entire system into chaos. When I travel in Chicago I only use one of three options: Google Maps, Waze or TomTom. Any of those three solutions will give you accurate traffic information about the route options. I trust all three of those apps without hesitation in Chicago.

The only thing I wouldn't do is take any side street detours off of the freeway to avoid traffic in the area west of I-90 but east of US-45 unless you're familiar with where you are.

Hollywood Casino in Joliet has an RV park. Probably about the only thing you're going to find south of Chicago.
