Southside of Chicago

Will be traveling up 65 from Indy to 294 north to north Milwaukee area. Looking for an overnight park on the south side of Chicago or even possibly on the south side of Milwaukee if we make it that far.

Any suggestions will be appreciated as we don't travel that way often in the mh.

McCormick Place 'marshalling yard', south of downtown Chicago, allows overnight stays for big rigs and RVs - $20... just a large parking lot right off the downtown convention center - no hookups or anything

when we were there we had the huge lot practically to ourselves - they also have security that drives around...
we took an Uber downtown to a Christian concert at the Blues venue...
if there is a convention at the center you might experience more traffic within the parking lot of course... : )

the night we were there Obama was coming into town to his residence - police escorts were EVERYWHERE!

Hi, We work for a county park about 30 miles west of 294 and it is easy to get to. Big Rock Campground.

We are off of I-88 easy off and on.
Not sure if you are looking for just an overnight but this is a great county park. $25 for out of county. We get alot of folks traveling thru the area.

Cook county has some parks but they are pricey. Sun-wed $45 and Thurs-Sat $60. They are not convenient in my opinion.

Hope that helps.

Are you nuts?

I grew up in Chicago's south side during the 50s and 60s. Englewood was my neighborhood. I graduated from the U of I at Chicago Circle campus in '77 and left for good.

Stay off the surface streets. Stay on the expressways. Know where you are going always.

There is a youtube video done by "Gone with the Wynns" . They stayed in that McCormick Place yard.

the address is: 2900 Moe Dr, Chicago, IL 60616

and I'll also add a small warning:

if you drive up along N Lakeshore dr to W Hollywood into the north part of town, like we did, you might experience an sudden and unplanned 12' overpass ! ...
N lakeshore and W Hollywood

I was thinking of taking a trip to Chicago in July for a convention in the Rosemont area. I checked around and there's really no campground or RV park in close proximity. So I decided to forego it.

Another Chicago native for 40 years. 8 homicides and 68 people wounded last weekend. Most of them in the area near McCormick Place. The latest fad is killing people on the expressways while they are driving thru. AVOID CHICAGO COMPLETELY unless you have a death wish or are completely insane! AVOID CHICAGO COMPLETELY.

That's a pretty nice looking campground, at least seeing it in Google Earth. I place-marked it for future reference.

The Cook County Forest Preserve has three campgrounds with RV parking including electrical hookups.

That's not accurate. Not only were most of the incidents NOT near McCormick Place, there was not even a single incident in the neighborhood near McCormick Place. Here is a link to a Chicago Tribune article about the violence this weekend. The headline correctly notes that most of the violence is on the west side: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/l...530-story.html

The article includes a map showing the location of every single incident of violence. There isn't a single incident on the south side that is east of the interstate let alone far enough east to be in the neighborhood of McCormick Place.

There is no question that Chicago has a significant problem, almost without debate, a bigger problem than any city in the United States. However, what is also equally true is that this is gang on gang violence that is almost exclusively contained to areas of the city that no tourist is going to get anywhere close to.

If your travel is going to take you on neighborhood streets west of I-90 but east of the western suburbs or south of the museum campuses then you better be very sure about where you're at. Outside of that, there is no widespread violence problem in the city of Chicago. There is a ridiculously high concentrated violence problem in very specific areas of the city.

Well Gee,

Really makes me think twice about maybe taking a long route around thru Rockford to get to Milwaukee.

We had planned on hitting 294 North clear thru the western side of Chitown but I remember even in a 4 wheeler it was sometimes a challenge.

Gotta think this over some more.

I wouldn't even consider going anywhere near that place!
Not a place for out of town folks. Even the Chicago police stay
out of the Southside unless they have to. But to each his/her own.
Not Me.

I'm assuming by your reference to that place you are referring to McCormick. Folks, there is nothing remotely unsafe about McCormick Place. It's not near the neighborhoods where the violence is. There is a new JW Marriott being built at McCormick Place. Marriott does not build hotels in the middle of the inner city.

and view the galley of the homicide in the lobby of the Hyatt Regency downtown.

What about the woman who got killed on Lake Shore Drive while trying to run from a robbery on Sunday? Do some research before you run your misinformed mouth.

BTW Chicago police DO NOT count people shot on Chicago expressways because those are under the jurisdiction of the Illinois State Police.
There has been a single murder at McCormick Place. One. Ever. The attendance at McCormick Place is 3 million visitors per year. That's an incident rate of 0.00003% of the annual visitors. You are three times more likely to get struck by lightning this year than to be killed at McCormick Place.

The incident with the woman that you mention on Lakeshore Drive was north of the city and has absolutely nothing to do with a conversation about McCormick Place.
