Spring Break Planning

Thinking ahead to Spring Break. Live in Chicago and will head straight south to the Gulf Coast the last week of March. Any recommendations for good camping and good hiking with a dog? State or local parks preferred, but private CGs are just fine.

Thanks and can't wait for the next camping season.

Gulf state park, AL. However, if you don't already have reservations, do so ASAP. It is a very popular place. Another advantage to this area is traveling. You miss the mountains on I75 if you are going to FL, and I 65 gets you almost there, perhaps 80 miles of state highways. You are a day-trip from NOLA by auto., Mobile is at most an hour away.

Top Sail state park in Destin, Fl. Lots of great trails, hike to the beach. Full hookups and just a very nice place to be. But, reservations need to be made now. If they are full, Henderson State park is also very nice.

Thanks to RayIN and DebbieMH for the recommendations. You were right about getting ahead of the reservation. Both spots are booked. We'll keep looking. It just might not be on the water, but it will be better than Chicago!

It'll be warm enough for any of the Alabama state parks - north or south. You might also look into the Corp of Engineer parks throughout the southern states.

Florida panhandle Destin area + spring break = out of control college kids. Proceed at your own risk, but I'm way too old now to hang in with that crowd, and I really can't image that it would be any fun for a family.......

Maybe look at the eastern panhandle, but not the Destin / Panama City area if you want a family vacation.

Can't believe Gulf State Park is booked, it has over 400 sites and spring break is usually spread over 3-4 weeks. There are several RV parks near GSP depending on your RV. Heritage and Terry Cove are class A only but each are bike rides from the park bike trails. Luxury RV in in Gulf Shores but is near GSP and is open to all types of RVs. Buena Vista is a new RV park that is across from the beach and backs up to GSP, it is open but still under construction as new phases are added. Sugar Sands is just across the intercostal waterway from the park but requires crossing a toll bridge. There are a lot of parks inland from there between the inter coastal and I10. GSP is nice, over 15 miles of paved bike and hiking trails plus zip lines as well.

Be aware of the anti-dog rules for Florida beaches. I guess dogs don't pay enough taxes.
