Spruce Pine, NC end of March - Good Idea?

Spring break for my girls this year is the end of March. They wanted to go back up to Spruce Pine, NC and stay at Bear Den campground right off the Blue Ridge parkway. We stayed there last July and had a blast going on several hikes and touring the local area.

My concern is the weather up there at that time of year. Looks like the average historical low is 35 and the high is 54. Our camper is a four season camper and we've camped in the high twenties (at night) for a week before, but not at any elevation. Has anyone camped in that area around the end of March, beginning of April? Our girls are young and love hiking (hike half way and ride on my shoulders the other half ) We'd be driving up from the Tampa Bay area and I'm also concerned about the roads leading up there should the weather be bad.

Thoughts? Opinions? Advice? All are welcome.

Our alternate plan is to stay in the South for March and do our Summer trip back to the mountains.

Thank you,

Joe

I've lived on the East Tn side of the Smokies most of my life. Weather at the end of March is highly variable and impossible to predict more than 3-5 days out. The odds are in your favor, but some big snow storms have hit the area at the end of March. I saw a lot of snow on April fools day one year. Go ahead & plan it but be flexible.

Thanks for the info Steve. Figure I'd need a heated water hose for the stay?
