St Louis

Hi,

We are thinking about going out to St Louis area to watch the Solar Eclipse. There are good highways both east and west to find the best weather and site to watch the actual eclipse. We wanted to stay and explore the city prior to the big day.

So looking for some recommendations on where to stay and things to do.

Thanks

when we're in St. Louis we stay at one of three places...

- Casino Queen RV Park in East St. Louis, IL. All paved, 24-hr security patrol, beautiful view of the arch and St. Louis skyline and close to commuter train station to take you into St. Louis. Not cheap but clean and quiet. Two different camping areas. the north side spaces are shorter and have some shade. the south side spaced are maybe 70' long with no shade. all sites are full hookup and all but those on the perimeter are pull thru.

- St. Peters370 Lakeside Park, St. Peters, MO. this is a city owned and run park. very nice park with full hookup spaces. registration desk is open 24-hrs. but as this is a very nice park reservations are needed.

- Sundermeier RV Park in St. Charles, MO. this park is right off I-270 but down below the roadbed level so most road noise is not heard. all sites are full hookup, paved, pull-thrus.

the Casino Queen would be my choice if I was going to sightsee the city.

We stayed at a place called the Casino Queen or Queen Casino campground in East St. Louis last week. It's a new campground in what is often called a bad part of town. Everyone we talked to said to never go to ESL! We were only there a night but wouldn't hesitate to go back.

If you have a car, there is easy access to cross the river into St. Louis. The arch is visible from the campground, and there is a Casino there with a shuttle.

I have heard that a lot of people are going to St. Louis for the same reason. Hope you don't mind crowds. Just saying...

St Louis

I have lived in the St. Louis area and surrounding county's all my life and still do in St. Charles about 5 mi from Park 370. I don't know about Casino Queen RV Park but I wouldn't stay there unless there is a real 24 hr. security. That is in East St. Louis which is in Illinois and is why you can see the St. Louis downtown skyline which is pretty at night. There are a lot of problems on the Metro Link Rail system right now with security and shootings and robberies. Park 370 is only about 7 mi from me it is very nice situated on a lake with bike or walking path, pedal boats archery range, fishing and close to Historic downtown St. Charles which you will love. About 15 miles from Camping World. No shade there. Site 113 is my favorite because of toad and visitor parking. You can drive to downtown St. Louis from Park 370 in 25min. There are Casinos in St. Charles too a 10min drive from Park 370. Nothing around Casino Queen except the casino. Park 370 has anything you want near it. Xboater you can also take the Grafton Ferry across the Mississippi and Illinois River about a 25min drive from Park 370 to Grafton a River town with a nice Marina and restaurants. You can PM if you have any questions. Park 370 fills up fast for special events and may want 2 night min?

Casino Queen has excellent security. Just follow the directions to the casino and no issues. We also used the metro during the daylight hours with no issues. If you are going to be visiting the sites in downtown, that is where I would stay. The casino does have a shuttle that takes people to the Cards games (take the stadium tour) and drops off/picks up right at the stadium.

I just stayed at Casino Queen over Memorial Day weekend this year.. While its not a "campground" per se.. it really was an excellent place to be and explore the city..

We had no issues.. people were nice.. security was very noticeable.. I think it's a perfectly place to stay..

Go.. enjoy and and don't worry... We're going to Land Between the Lakes, KY to see the eclipse..

Don't forget to buy glasses !!!

Edmund Babler State Park is an excellent place to stay for touring St. Louis. It's a huge, beautiful park with lots of grass and trees.

I'll preface this by saying I've never been there, but there is an actual RV park in downtown St. Louis. I have no idea about how nice it is or isn't, but it might be something to check out if you want very close proximity to downtown and actually be in walking distance or Metrolink distance to everything.

We stayed at St. Louis NE/I-270/Granite City KOA at the beginning of July. It is about 15-20 drive to the Arch/City. Nothing special, but was clean and friendly.

Two of our favorites were the City Museum (may not appeal to seniors, but is basically a hip, family playground in a 10-story building) and the Cathedral. Our teenage children loved City Museum. I would highly recommend the St. Louis Cathedral/Bascilica as well. Beautiful catholic church that is open for daily tours. Wonderful mosaics and simply incredible. My teenage children were amazed by the craftsmanship and work put into it.

Have fun...it's a wonderful city.

Nobody mentioned going up to the top of the Arch. I, of course, had to do that. Really neat view from up there.

They also sell White Castle hamburgers in the St Louis area. Can't get then where I live so that was a treat for me.
