Hi new rver,
Consider Bahia Honda State Park. Go to Bahia Honda State Park, Florida Keys Beach, Beaches in the Keys, State Park in the Keys, Florida Keys State Park, Public Beach Florida Parks and take a look. It is around mile marker (MM) 36. There are many actives both North and South of this MM.

The secret is that you must book way in advance. These sites are booked just as soon as the booking window opens. I believe it is a year out. For FL residents 65+ the state CG's are half price. Lots of folks spend their winters in them. Getting a host site is also not an easy thing either. You can try the panhandle with much better success.

Bahia Honda is pretty much booked until the end of september as far as spaces that will accomodate a 40 footer. I just checked thinking about going there in April but it's full.

If you want to get into one of the more popular SP campgrounds you will have to try to reserve 11 months ahead of the starting time of your visit.
You will have to start looking way ahead of time to get to know when the sites are reserved and for how long they are reserved.
We have been doing it for several years now and don't always get what we want, when we want it.
Good Luck, Indiana Journey

From the website, it looks like they allow you to book past the reservation window as long as your reservation STARTS in the window. So tomorrow you will be able to book Jan. 24, 2012 but only TWO sites (21 and 30) have availability for Jan. 24, 2012.

Seems like there is a bigger selection of sites available when the window opens for Jan. 29, 2012.

If you have a slow internet connection, that can definitely hurt you when trying to make that reservation. The secret may be having everyone in your family, using separate internet connections, try to get a reservation every morning!

Good luck!

We've been the last 2 years. Our secret is cancellations. You must have the ability to be ok not knowing where you're going in as little as 2 days. Someone ALWAYS cancels. I've always been able to piece mill a month to 6 weeks between Jan-Mar and we have a 38' 5th wheel. I do use Sunshine Key (across from Bahia Honda) as a place to stay as well as a backup plan. It's $20/nt with a ReadyCampGo! card. Fiesta Key is offering $55/nt this winter. Also, the State Parks hold back 5-10% of sites for walk ins. I haven't had to do it yet but hear you should physically be there between 8-9am and you can book that site for up to 2 weeks.

You must book several months ahead to get a space at a Calif State CG at the Beaches. Some....of them keep about 20 spaces empty for one night stays for the passing thru people. I've been lucky that way several times.

You all know how difficult it can be to know exactly when you will arrive due to those unforeseen troubles. So missing your resevation can be a bummer. I've waited at the window at 9am to see if someone cancelled.

Yea! I got in. Middle of the week campnites is easiest to reserve with just a couple months ahead.

Camping is sooooo......much fun !!! I've been doing it for 50 yrs. Reservations ?? what were those about ?? never needed them !
Now....gotta have 'em.

Guess we should not have told everyone how much fun we had every weekend.

Camping is alot like sex....its so much fun, the word spreads.....then everyones doing it.
