Don't know how close you want to be, but last year we stayed in a MS state park at Waveland about 50 drive. Also Fountine Bleu SP is nice and a bit closer.

Have been told that Bayou Segnette SP is a good place to stay. Have never been there so I can't give you a personal evaluation. It is in Westwego about 6 miles from NOLA and you can get reviews at: RV Park Reviews :: Home

We are glad you want to come to Louisiana. You may want to check before you come, there was damage at several state parks around New Orleans after Hurricane Isaac.

According to this link, several of the state parks around NO are closed until further notice: Maps of Parks and Historic Sites - Louisiana Office of State Parks

Bayou Segnette was totally awesome. Over there on the west bank.

Another vote for Bayou Segnette.

Drive to Algiers Point (parking is $5 unless there is a special event going on in NO, which there is many weekends) and take the free ferry to the foot of Canal St. From there, it's an easy walk to the French Quarter. No parking and traffic hassles.

Also Fountainebleau SP is still closed. I've been wanting to check it out, so I check the website pretty often.

If you follow the link to Bayou Segnette, the park is OPEN effective October.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I have never been to Bayou Segnette so I have a couple of questions. First, is it a secure area and second, what is the best way to access the park. I recall that the Huey Long Bridge is very narrow so I am looking for the best route into the park.

Yes, the area is secure. There is a gate and guard shack at the front entrance and a rear entrance gate to be used with a code after hours.

We have been to Bayou Segnette several times. Our route usually takes us in by the US 90 Business bridge off of I-10 and out by the Huey P. Long Bridge. The Huey P. Long Bridge is a little narrow, but it is no problem for big rigs. We drive a 37' motorhome with toad. The US 90 bridge is wider.
