We went there 8-12-2010. That's when the bears are fishing as the Salmon are running in Fish Creek.
Stayed at Camp Run-A-Muck which is close to Fish Creek. Not much in Hyder but Stewart has more stores & restaurants.
The roads in were just fine, no trouble at all.
Have fun.

And another thing I just thought of.
Take the dirt road that goes past the RV park 20 miles north to Salmon Glacier. It is spectacular.
If the old school bus restaurant is still there in Hyder, stop in.

Thanks so much! Will be our first significant road trip. Want to knock off the last of the US States we haven't visited yet.

I hope you're not ending your trip at Stewart/Hyder. As long as you go that far, do the whole Alaska thing. It's recommended to go up on the Alaskan Highway and return on the Cassier to catch the grizzlies at Stewart/Hyder in August.

The roads are good.

I'm lucky enough to be retired, and would love to do that long of a trip, unfortunately my lovely wife only has so many vacation days a year. This trip will take care of all 50 states for me before I turn 51... So it's just for the family bragging rights.

If that is you final destination, I hope you aren't disappointed. There isn't much to recommend either Hyder or Stewart as destinations. But you could also head over to Prince Rupert and catch the Ferries over to Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlottes) or take the Ferry down to Vancouver Island and come back through Victoria to US soil. The Ferries aren't cheap however. Or if you would rather drive back, then drop by Barkerville outside of Quesnelle. That is always good for a day or two.

I highly recommend the drive up to Salmon Glacier, it's spectacular. The bears probably won't be out til Aug. for the salmon run in Stinky Creek.
