TxTiger, hello, tried to look up Custer State park but it looks like it is a lot farther than 40 miles away. Which campground is it?[/QUOTE]
Custer SP is about 70-80 miles from Main St Sturgis, depending on the route taken. During the 2 weeks of the rally, figure on about 2 hours to make the trip . Beautiful area, we do day rides there from our CG in Sturgis.

stayed there several years ago for a couple nights. It was fine; nothing special. Pretty interesting area though, and certainly worth seeing.

this thread has gotten pretty long and I really can't recall whether or not I have replied to it or not. That said, it is quite a distance from The Badlands to Sturgis. It is also hot there in the Badland and there is not a lot of trees. Interesting place to see for a few hours, but nothing I would want to spend several days seeing.

Don't know about the CG, but I love the Badlands and routinely spend at a day or two at least day visiting. Wall Drug is a fun place to visit especially if you have kids. That said, it is about an hour (less if thunderstorm's are chasing you) back to Sturgis. In the the Badlands, you are closer to Rushmore, Keystone, Needles Highway than you are to Sturgis. Are all the Custer CG's full? How about Keystone/Rushmore. I think I read somewhere that the Spearfish Canyon City CG still had room.

"Oh officer, I'm sorry, 90 is the road number and NOT the speed limit??"
For the several months we have stayed in the area, I never had an encounter with any law enforcement except a deputy P/T Custer County deputy who was a ranger in the park. Arrests made in Custer County had to be transported to Rapid for jail. The area residents realize how valuable the tourist dollar is and treat them with like it. All bets are off in Sturgis during bike weeks. Be good or be gone - they hire a lot of out of town and some out of state officers

I agree Doc. Stop signs are sacred shrines and full stops with both feet on the ground are required. Drinking laws, handlebar height, etc are strictly enforced. The Sturgis website has great info. some of the best fun we have had is in the surrounding cities, Hill City, Custer, Keystone ....

You said it Russ... While I'm looking forward to a day or two, and night, in Sturgis... I'm really looking forward to seeing the surrounding area's.. Couple years ago I was in Custer with the family the week before Sturgis.. we left before things really started up.. but that area is so beautiful.. I really can't wait..

Well.... I don't want to jinx things.. but I can officially say my riding season has begun.. I installed the new battery last night and took a ride... and today.. I rode the bike to work... it was chilly in the morning.. but I'm about to go home in 60+ weather..
Looking forward to a great riding season this year... I hope you've been able to get your bike out and about... if not, I hope you get to soon..

If you take the Interstate it is only about one hour or less from Custer State Park to Sturgis. There are several campgrounds in the park, Game Lodge, Legion Lake, Blue Bell, etc. There is a free dump station in the park and water is available to fill your tank at the shower building is all campgrounds except Center Lake.
