Texas Advice?

We're looking for a place to spend a month or so this winter in Texas. Probably San Antonio/Austin area but I'm not totally firm on that.

I'm looking for some advice and recomendations on where might be the best places to look at both in terms of location and weather and which parks are the nicest for the value.

I know there are some beautiful parks in that area but they're really expensive and out of the question.

That's always a tough question because I don't know what you're really looking for in an RV park or its surroundings.

If you want something rural with more of a Texas Hill Country flavor, take a look at Miller Creek RV Resort south of Johnson City, TX. From there, it's easy to get to Austin on US290 or San Antonio on US281 - both excellent 4-lane highways. You're also close to Fredericksburg and other Hill Country attractions, and you'll never find any friendlier owners who will try to meet your every need.

If you're looking for something more "metro" or "urban" near I-35, you might consider Hill Country RV Resort in New Braunfels, TX, between Austin and San Antonio.

If these aren't what you're looking for, let us know. There are lots of other alternatives.

If metro just south of Austin on 35 lone star Rv park I have stayed there many times

If you are not dead set on that area, come on down to our area. It's further south by about 250 miles and warmer. Take a look at Green Caye in Dickinson, TX for about $370 a month and that includes utilities. There are others around but I'm not sure on their prices. the $370 was last year when friends stayed there, but call ahead or check their web site.

San Antonio is a very nice place to visit and we love the River Walk and the adjacent Hill Country.

Depending on your wants. If you just want a place to park, try the two on Gimble road san ant. Dixie and Happy trails, and down the street is the KOA.

Frankly, that's the reason I didn't list Buckhorn Lake in my initial recommendations - that, and the distance from Austin. It's certainly a nice upgrade.....

Fredericksburg is a nice area. Depending on when you plan on going - the "Hill Country" as you requested, can get chilly. Further south is warmer but the Hill Country is still very nice.

Come down to where it is warm. Palm and grapefruit trees.

Agree with this. Also, Stone Creek RV Park between New Braunfels and San Antonio might be cheaper. It does have a lot of full time residents, but the park is clean and peaceful and under new ownership.

Buckhorn RV in Kerrville is indeed very nice and Kerrville is a great town. It does get pretty cold (for Texas) however. Might even see a snow flake or two.

If Stonecreek is one I am thinking of in Shertz, TX, that is one place on our list of never to go to again. As a group we have never been treated so badly as there. This is based on the ownership in 2002. It won't get better until they clean up the permanent residents as well.

Wow. Thanks for all your great suggestions. I will check them out right away.

One of the things I should have mentioned in the original post is we're looking for areas with golfing nearby. I know there's lots of options in the San Antonio area, and I'm sure there are plenty of courses all through the state.

Also, could you give us thoughts on what the December to February weather is like in the San Antonio area? Maybe, as one poster suggested, we should be looking further south.
