Johnny Cash once said, "I have been everywhere man". But, most RVers have not ...

So, I was thinking the other day ... Oh no, DW has that look that I know so well

every time I get to thinking ... I told her, no really, I was thinking that RVers want to go and see places, but they don't much enjoy burning diesel

just to get there ... So, I said to self, "Self, why not ask others at the irv2 forum for feedback before you start them engines ..."

So, what I'm looking to do is get feedback from others that are familiar with specific states to help snowbirds and sunbirds with their travels.

Since Texas is a favorite place for many RVers ...

What parts of Texas do you recommend for other RVers? ... What parts would you put in the category of not worth the diesel needed to get there?

I think, in time, we could build a database from threads like this for each state in the US, places in Canada, Alaska, etc.

Every bit of Texas is worth going to. Plains, forest, beach, mountains, desert. Except Midland/Odessa

The DW and I were there a few years back. It is an amazing place. We parked at the far end of the park, down at the bottom. We were there for a week. It was pretty hot. I think we were there the end of June.

Lots of great hiking. Saw something I never thought I would see. While driving around the park, I had to stop on the road because first a pretty big coyote crossed in front of me, followed by a deer. For a minute or so the coyote and deer where doing their thing. The coyote seemed to be testing the deer to see how vulnerable the deer was. It kept charging it and the deer kept fighting back. Then they ran into the woods.

Saw some snakes, rabbits. There may also be some mountain lions, but I did not see any. One morning, right after waking up, I looked out the back of the RV bedroom window and noticed that a pretty big patch of grass had been compressed, as though something big slept there over night. Most likely a big coyote. Hopefully not a mountain lion.

For something really special, bring some night vision goggles and go hiking at night. But, you may want to stay on the trails as the snakes will be out there. You may want to have a knife or something with you, just in case. Just don't get lost out there. It is a big place. The view of the sky on a clear night is just amazing.

They have horse back riding into the canyon. That is pretty cool. They also have a live theater performance with a pretty good show.

All and all, a nice place to relax for a week or two. But, I would recommend going there during the cooler months. Also, don't expect to have cellphone service down there. And if you need gas, you need to drive out of the canyon, about 10 minutes depending where you're camping and then about a 15 minute ride into the town of Canyon TX.

Okay . . . now don't get this wrong. We actually leave Texas to go enjoy many other parts of the country. But there are just four distinctly wonderful places in Texas to spend some time:

North

East

South

West

It was a while back but we stayed at a KOA in San Antonio that was on the city bus route. We were able to take the bus down to the River Walk and the Alamo while leaving the m/h safe and sound at the campground. We also spent time on a Padre Island which was wonderful. Hope to return next winter.

Big Bend during the fall and winter.
Guadalupe River in Sattler.
New Braunfels for German food.
Gruene for Gruene Hall (1878), Texas’ oldest continually operating and most famous dance hall.
San Antonio with Alamo and River Walk.
Midland/Odessa so you can visit Monahans SP, with dunes and Shin Oaks, that when mature are 3-4' trees.
Piney Woods with all the lakes.
All of the coast
Amarillo for Canyon and free 72 oz. steak.
Ft. Worth Stockyard for steak, Western music and dancing.
Luling for BBQ and many many other small towns for BBQ.
Anywhere for Chicken Fried Steak
Shiner for Shiner Brock
Anywhere in Hill Country

Not room to list everywhere so as others have listed: North, South, East and West and all points in between.

Its a beautiful place. Breathtaking views. Its worth the trip.
We also found a neat little RV park in Alvin TX.
The owners have lived on a sailboat, traveled canals in Europe, loved scuba diving.
The location is central to Houston and the Gulf. Nice place to spend a few days.
