Texas Gulf Coast, Port Aransas

We have reservations at Gulf Waters RV resort January 14 - early February. Spoke to place today in Port Aransas who rents golf cars. He advised Gulf Waters has recovered beautifully. He says some restaurants and bars in Port Aransas have reopened but no gift shops, museums or much else. He says Rockport is basically gone.

Gulf Waters is one of the nicest parks in Texas. You will enjoy it.

But yes, PA is pretty much wiped out. Have two close friends whose houses were a total loss there. At least one was able to get north in their Phaeton.

We considered cancelling our reservation (we made it almost one year ago) after the hurricane but we decided to keep it when the folks at Gulf Waters said they would be back online by the time we got there in January. We hoped Port Aransas would have made some recovery. Sounds like a few eateries and a couple of bars is about it for now. We're thinking we will need to head to Corpus Christie for provisions, shopping, entertainment other than the beach.

There’s one major food store in PA. I think it’s an IGA. In any case, it’s a solid concrete block kind of place that’s been there forever and probably back in business.

That said, you will save money if you swing down to CC on the way in (avoid the Ferry) and hit the H-E-B by the causeway bridge. Produce is fresher too.

Spoke to a Ranger at Padre Island National Seashore yesterday and he conveys everything there is in great shape. The park was on the better side of the storm ,winds were less distructive. They are looking forward to a fine season.

More things are fine in Port A, Rockport is finding it hard to recover. The ferries are working and you can get to Ingleside and Aransas Pass where there is an HEB grocery store and many Restaurants along with a Wal Mart. Please don't fret! Texas loves winter Texans!

Port A

We spent a week in October camped at Padre Balli Park (unaffected by the storm) on north Padre Island, some 20 miles south of Port Aransas, but visited the storm-ravaged community where we've stayed at IB McGee Beach Park in past years. A lot of damage, some recovery. We ate lunch at Virginia's, which is back in full operation. As others have said, Rockport is a mess. Mountains of debris. So sad.
