We're planning our summer trip to Mt. Rushmore. It will be our first trip from Texas to South Dakota and looks like it will be approximately 1250 miles. We're considering central Texas to Kansas as our first leg of the trip.

What route do you recommend? Any commendations for campgrounds along the way in Kansas?

Any recommendations for campgrounds near Mt. Rushmore? We usually stay at state, national or COE parks. While we love our fellow campers, we dont' like to be parked under their awnings and like scenic parks.

We appreciate any recommendations or advice.

Near Rushmore we stayed at Rafter J Bar Ranch. It was a big park, spacious sites and convenient to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse and other sights to see around the area. http://www.rafterj.com/

Check out rvparkreviews.com and you will find good info on parks around the country.

Have fun. It is a great area of the country to visit.

There are a couple of campgrounds in Custer State Park that looked nice. Don't miss the Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park, Spearfish Canyon drive, Deadwood, Needles Highway and Iron Mountain Road. We stayed at Rushmore Shadows RV Park. We are still here, but it turned cold yesterday and we will be leaving for warmer places this Friday. There is lots to see.

If you like state parks, you'll love Custer State Park. We leave Tuesday and will be there a few days later. Game Lodge Campground is right in the middle of the action and they recently put in 50 amp service. Book ahead on the web at http://www.sdgfp.info/Parks/Regions/Custer/index.htm.

We did a similar trip last summer from North Texas. We went up IH35 to Topeka and stayed there for the night at what used to be a KOA that recently was not a KOA. Kinda off the beaten path but our Garmin took us right to the front door. From Topeka to Kansas City then up IH29 to Sioux Falls, SD, then across IH90 to the Black Hills. Stayed a couple of places on that stretch for overnights. We stayed at the Rafter Bar J in the Hills and just loved it.

On the way back we went through Wyoming and stayed for a bit in Colorado Springs. Next stop was Amarillo to check out Palo Duro Canyon (and a steak at the Big Texan!!). Then home. It was a great trip and we can't wait to do it again.
