Mitchell SD holds memories for us. Years ago my wife and 2 kids were driving west and I wanted to stop and show them the Corn Palace. As I exited i-90, a Sheriff's car turned on his lights and stopped me. He and a reporter climbed out of the car and said it was Rodeo Days in Mitchell and they were looking for an out of state visitor with kids and wanted to offer us a night on the town!. We got a hotel, steak dinner, passes to all the museums in town and a special card for the dashboard to get us in the rodeo. We had the dinner and drove to the rodeo. Traffic was heavy until a deputy saw the card on our dash. He stopped all traffic and waved us on by. Arriving at the rodeo we were ushered to front row seats and were offered free drinks and food after being introduced to the crowd from our VIP seats. The next morning before leaving town we decided to stop in one of the museums. They greeted us by name, seems our photo was on the front page of the daily paper!

Mitchell certainly caters to visitors, but besides farming, what other industry do they have on the prairie? The folks were great and we got the key to the city of Mitchell, which happens to also double as a bottle opener! Good times!

We got pulled over too coming in to town, but all we got was a one ticket to see their local judge!!!

We drove a 36 ft Pace, pulling a Honda civic, with no problem. It AINT Disney World, but we enjoyed the decorations. It is different from anything we had seen before. I thought it well worth the 15 minutes we spent driving to and from the interstate.
