We are planning a late spring trip south along the Mississippi River. We will start from Lake Itasca and end just before New Orleans. If anyone can suggest good campgrounds along the way we'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Last July we stayed at Ray Behrens Corps of Engineers Campground at Mark Twain Lake in Vandalia, MO, about 45 minutes from Hannibal (Mark Twain's birthplace). There is also a state park at the lake, but we stayed at the CoE campground. The campground has huge sites, some open with grass and a few trees to heavily wooded. Full hook-ups, unusual for CoE, are available for $22 a night. Camping fees are half price if you have an America the Beautiful Pass. There was a fairly large non-reservation section which is helpful if you want to make a last-minute stop. I recommend reservations if you are arriving on a weekend, however.
