Oh, yes. After Labor Day Maine is calm and relaxed. July and August it is croweded and frenetic by comparison.

Maine is never truly frenetic. A popular t-shirt says Maine: Life in the Slow Lane. But during September you can usually walk into many campgrounds, hotels and restaurants that need reservations in the summer.

[QUOTE=jeffwit;1920881]Are the crowds significantly bigger mid-August vs early/mid-September?[/QUOTE

Maine is never truly crowded. I would be more concerned with weather issues and mid August will give you the possibility of better weather than September.

The weather in Maine should not be a problem in September, unless you plan to travel into the far northern, inland mountain area, and then it will most likely be fine. Yes, it can get a little cool at night, but that is refreshing. On the other hand, depending on where you travel, traffic can be an issue. The coastal route (Route 1) can be a long, slow ride anywhere from Kittery to Portland and beyond. We have been living in New England for 60 years and have a cottage in Ogunquit.

Yes. Exactly why I suggest staying on I 95 until Augusta and then going east to the coast on Rt 3 or Rt 17

CG Campground is a nice place well kept and clean. Staff is excellent and very helpful. Stayed there in Oct 2012.
