Thinking of heading to Maine

We are considering heading to Maine in the spring of 2010. We've never been up there and are looking for places to go and stay.
Suggestions? Is spring to early in the year?

Well...what do you consider spring?? Many campgrounds dont open till mid-may, so you would have to be carefull with that.
I think as far as must sees, Acadia National park is unbeleivable, as well as the small towns around Ogunquit. Kenney bunk port is neat as well. We were up ther last year, and can help you out if you have questions PM me.

Freeport, the home of LLBean is worth stopping at. We love camping in Boothbay Harbor and Bar Harbor. In Bar Harbor I'd recommend a whale watching trip.

We're from Florida and had hoped to avoid the summer crowds. Spring to us is February/March. We know that won't work in Maine. We've never been up there and would plan on spending about ten days in Maine.

We're just seeking input on where to go, what to see, and where we would find a nice campgroud capable of holding our 40' RV.

We recently spent a couple of weeks in ME on our way to our current location.....Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. With a 40' moho I was told that our 40' would not fit in a campsite at Acadian NP. We took the toad and explored it. We stayed several places but I remember the name of one just outside Bangor.....Pumpkin Patch. They and a lot of the CGs in ME accept Passport America which will save you quite a bit so you may want to consider joining for the savings. I do think February and March is going to be c-c-c-c-c-o-o-o-l-l-l-d-d-d-d for us Fl boys.

A few years ago we wanted to go to Maine and after some research we ended up at Little Ponderosa Campground in Boothbay Maine. A great find. I believe they are actually open year round. Large wooded sites. Older but very clean restroom facilities. Coin operated Showers but just a Quarter and lots of hot water. Mostly done so kids do not leave shower running. Camp also has deep well water. They actually have a local restaurant which delivers twin lobster dinners to your campsite. They have a card to enter and you just need to give them your site number. Close to Boothbay Harbor. If you go take the shuttle out to the lighthouse and tour the island. Tons of things to do around Boothbay.

If you go in summer to Maine be ready for mosquitos. It is their "State Bird". Little Ponderosa has large propane mosquito catchers all around the camp which helps. Spring not as bad. You can also rent ocean Kayaks and take them from the dock right at the camp and paddle the ocean inlets right out to the ocean if ambitious. Just keep track of tides or you could end up carrying it home. We set up camp the first night with a real nice waterway right behind our camper only to wake up to a mud hold the next morning when tides went out. Also Wale watch tours leave from Boothbay Harbor. Boothbay reminded me of Cabot Cove from the Murder She Wrote TV Show.

A Couple of corrections

FYI, Kenny Bunk Port is actually Kennebunkport. Ponderosa in Boothbay is now closed. Underestand, Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor are two different towns. One is on the water, one is not.
Shore Hills Campgrond is just down the road from Ponderosa but does not open until April 15th depending on the weather. We stayed there one Easter weekend and lost water presure over night because their lines froze.
FACT: There are two "Maine's". The coastal touristy areas and then there is the remaining inland areas. Don't under estimate the size of this state. I doubt you will take a day trip up to Eastport from "Kenny Bunk Port". Check it out on Mapquest.
Fact: We have four seasons here, 1-Winter, 2-Mud, 3-Bug, and the fourth of July. Enjoy!

Be glad to fill you in on any area, campground or tourist trap you have an interests in. Feel free to PM us. We may need to help you understand "Spring" a little better.

Spring is black fly season in ME up until about mid-end of June. They will drive you nuts. Not bad on the coast though. Then the state bird of ME takes over, the mosquito (their joke not mine). Acadia is our favorite east coast destination. Great park!! Late June is good because you beat the crowds. September after Labor Day is even better.

I think Little Ponderosa is gone. Or perhaps just changed names. Check before you go.

We love Maine. Have gone back to Bar Harbor many times over the years. A few years ago we discovered Booth Bay when we went to a rally there. As previously mentioned the campground we stayed at is now closed (Probably due to our group lol) Beautiful country. If going through to Bar Harbor I'd suggest following rte 1 up the coast.

I was just thinking. In 2/3 of Maine the snow melt begins quite rapidly around 15 April and by May its a done deal. Southern Maine melt is obviously ahead of the North. Snow is possible at almost any time but is not a real issue in the summer. Enjoy the Lobster and Clams!

A must see is Rangley Lake area. State Park on the lake. Truly breath taking. Just did 7 days there. I hope to do Down East coastal area sometime soon.

I was still riding my snowmobile in April this year in Maine, not on the coast but we had some good snow this past winter.

We leave Saturday for Booth Bay Harbor, Grays Campground. Staying there for a few days then onto Belfast to Morings CG. Towing the bike with us for a trip to the casino in Bangor one day.

For me it's western Maine in the winter months, and there is nothing like Down East in the summer. Great coastal roads to ride the bike on. Plenty to eat, tons of history to explore. How's my luck though, we may get a look at hurricane Bill if he follows a couple of the tracks that are projected. I'm just hoping he turns out to the east and heads straight to Greenland.

the FL spring bk and the ME spring bk are way different. Mid March to me is to cold and most thing are not open on the coast yet. Little ice shops, fish markets, stuff like that.

Bar Harbor and Cadillac Mtn are GREAT, Nubble Light and other great light houses, TONS of little shopes, outlets and such. You really cant go wrong with Kennybunkport, York, Old Orchard Beach, Boothbay and such.

My wife is from Caribou, but its a whole different world in The County
