Thoughts on our 1st extended trip?

We will be picking up our 5th wheel in Albuquerque the week of the Balloon Festival then spend about 3-4 weeks making our way just past Tallahassee. These are our initial thoughts. I have not started research RV parks, etc. Just hoping for comments as to the sanity of the route before looking into the details any further. Thanks!!

1 – Albuquerque – Balloon Festival
2 – Grants - El Morro National Monument, Bandera Crater and Ice Caves
3 - San Antonio - Valley of Fires
4 – Truth or Consequences - Gila Cliff Dwellings and Gila River Canyon
5 – Las Cruces – Dripping Springs
6 – Carlsbad Caverns

Then head towards Florida via Dallas, Shreveport, Baton Rouge, Mobile

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I'd say you better make reservations far ahead in the Albuquerque area during the balloon festival. Gila Cliff is probably nearer to Silver City, at least that's the way we went. There was a length limit on one of the two roads going there. Don't recall which tho. Lots of switchbacks and the trail up to the cliffs was very hot when we went, probably June or July.

Definitely have reservations if you're around Albuquerque at Balloon Festival time or perhaps the RV dealer where you're picking it up will let you spend the night on their lot. Many will.

El Morro has a nice campground.

Valley of Fires BLM Rec. Area has a campground

Definitely do White Sands Nat'l Monument

For Gila Cliff Dwelling don't take 152 from I-25 at Caballo. It's narrow and twisty - 6% grades - 10 to 25 mph. 12'6" is height limit for two bridges. You need to come in from I-25 to 26 at Hatch, NM (stop for lunch including the famous Hatch Chilis) to 180 toward Silver City, NM. City of Rocks State Park is very nice and unique to stay and then drive your truck up to Gila. 35 is the better road to Gila if you take your RV. Stay at Mesa national forest campground not too far from Gila Cliffs.

Grants has a KOA that will fix dinner and bring it to your RV. Great pie too.

Buccanner state park in Waveland,MS is nice also Maeher State Park in Spanish Fort, which is on the east side of Mobile Bay is nice. They are each close to the water with nice views. Great for an overnight stop or longer stay with plenty of local things to do.
