Travel help up I95
i am going from Hilton Head Island to Wilmington De. and will be traveling up I95. We don't want to go much more than 3-1/2 hours or so per day. Does anyone know of any decent campgrounds for overnight stays. We are planning on 3 nights on the road. Also, are there any better routes to get to Wilmington by going back roads rather than going through Washington and Baltimore? This is our first long trip and have been looking on Good Sams Trip Planner, but you all are much more experienced. Thanks for your help.

If you are going to travel thru baltimore on 95 you will have to take 695 east over the key bridge. No propane allowed on the 95 baltimore harbor tunnel. It is a detour you must take. I know you said you wanted to bypass dc and balt. So hopefully this wont be an issue.

Have you thought about going through the Virginia Beach area and taking the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel? The DelMarVa peninsula is scenic and there are a number of campgrounds along the way

I would look at either the bridge tunnel from Norfolk VA to the DelMarVa Penninsula or Rt 301 south of DC.
We stopped at Yogi Bears in Emporia, VA and New Green Acres in Waldboro, SC down and back this year. The second is probably too close to you and the first too far. I recall there is a Campground around Lumberton, NC that is about your distance for a day. You probably want to be south of Richmond or Norfolk your second night. The reason I mentioned the parks we stayed at is that there was a definite transient section with pull through sites where we stopped. Nothing spectacularly good or bad to remark on. I think that is what you will run into in Lumberton. The I-95 corridor has a lot of one night traffic and the campgrounds seem to have adjusted to efficiently move folks through.

You could consider I 95 to 301. Follow 301 and take the bridges over into Grasonville, MD. Then follow 301 all the way up to the Wilmington, DE area. 301 is a nice road, little traffic, flat, two lanes each direction. Great route to completely avoid DC and Baltimore.

Americamps might be an option. They're just north of Richmond in Ashland, Va. Easy in, easy out.

I agree with taking 301.
Exit I95 at Carmel Church in VA onto 207.
207 merges with 301 near Fort A.P. Hill.
Follow 301 all the way to DE.
I always take this route to avoid DC and Balt.

I think the 301 route is probably your best bet to avoid DC. The Bay Bridge Tunnel is a pretty drive too, but not sure I'd want to do the tunnel / bridge in an RV if it were windy. Other options would put you pretty far west for your destination.

We crossed the CBBT and stopped at Kiptopeak State Park just north of the bridge on the western shore. Nice park and very scenic.
They asked us if propane was turned on and told us to pull over and turn it off before proceeding. Nice drive.
