Just a suggestion...instead of going through the Chicago area, take Hwy 2 across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. You are missing all of Michigan on your route and it's an awesome state to visit. Drive along the east shore of Lake Michigan up to Sleeping Bear Dunes Nat'l Lakeshore and the Traverse City area. Then cross the Mackinac Bridge into the Upper Peninsula. Hwy 2 going all across the country and is a very pleasant drive through those Plains states.
It appears that you're taking interstates for the most part. I'd recommend driving the secondary highways to really see the country.
