You didn't say what time of year you would be doing this trip. In the summer months it's hot in Las Vegas and along the Colorado river so plan accordingly.

You don't say which way you are leaving Cali, but if you are going over I-80 or US-50 there id's a whole lot to see in northern Nevada. Virginia City, The Nevada State Museum and the Railroad museum in Carson City, drive south on US 395 through Minden and Gardnerville. Keep going south to Lake Topaz, then east toward Yerington along the Walker River through Wilson Canyon, or keep going south on 395 to the California state park at the ghost town of Bodie, CA. From there you can cross over to Hawthorne, NV and go south toward Las Vegas on US 95. Hawthorne has two small local museums, but I don't know days/hours of operation.
