Trip from Austin to Minneapolis

Morning all,

We are planning our first big excursion in our "08 42' Camelot" from Houston to Minneapolis. Any and all recommendations are appreciated in terms of recommendated routing and especially campgrounds that will work for my rig. I have looked for some in the Minneapolis area and not sure if any will work. We are staying 3 nights in the Minneapolis area and 3 nights in the Alexandria area, then heading over to Custer SD area for 5 or 6 days.

Thanks in advance for input

Pretty chilly up here and a lot of campgrounds are closed this time of the year. Hope you are brushed up on your winter driving skills. I live in WI. it was 7 above yesterday morning and 9 this morning, I think I would go where it's warm so I wouldn't have to worry about things freezing up, and come up here next summer..:

AS noted, lots of campgrounds closed this time of the year and you will need to deal with the issues of freezing weather and how well your RV handles the cold weather. How will you keep it warm while traveling in freezing weather? Or do you drain the pipes and winterize?

we generally avoid this kind of situation.

Their is a real nice state park in WI. just over the line at exit 4 then go north just a little it's on the left. It's called Willow River State Park. It is a ways from Minneapolis but if you have a toad it's not that far. I'm sure their are closer places but I don't know of any on the MN side. It is a lot warmer in June all though it was 40 here today.

chillin47, we just came through that route from Fort Worth, Tx. Spent 1st night in Topeka, at the Deer Creek Valley RV park, just off of Kansas turnpike (hwy 70) All concrete pullthroughs with full hook ups, gated, store etc. Owner is Ron and wife. $32 AAA rate. Second night stayed at the Grand Hinkley Casino RV park, just north of Minneapolis off hwy#35 N. = $20/ nt. FHU. A good days drive apart, but we were heading home not vacationing.

Clear Lake State Park is in the northern part of Iowa. Cheap, right on the Lake, and 2 miles off of I 35, Good Luck

We found the Rafter J Bar Ranch - Home to be a great place to stay in the Custer area of SD. Very convenient and I'll also suggest that 5 days ain't enough time to do justice to the area.

Custer State Park is nice, great scenery and wildlife on the circle drive. Close to Rushmore and Crazyhorse.

We stayed at Rafter J Bar Ranch this last May and it is indeed a great place. Plenty of room, close to Custer, Rushmore, Crazy Horse. And Custer State Park is good also...

Rafter J sounds real good. Has anyone stayed at Beaver Lake (3 to 5 miles out of Custer)?

For the 3 days in "Minnie" we were pleased with Lebanon Hills Regional Pk. It's a couple miles off I-35E and 15-20 minutes from Mall of the Americas. The sites were HUGE! and for the area, the price wasn't bad. Are you using RV Park Reviews site??? www.campgroundreviews.com

chillin47:

Look up "Dakota Meadows RV Resort" located down next to Prior Lake, MN. on the Southwest edge of the Minneapolis area. It's a wonderful campground that is part of what is called the Mystic Lake Casino and has easy, convenient access to anywhere in the Mpls./St. Paul metro. It's great!!
