The end of December, I would not be taking I-40. It's prone to blizzards, ice and highway closings. This happened to us the end of April one year around Albuquerque.

I'd recommend dropping down to I-20 to I-10 into Tucson.

I'd check the weather forecast when you get close to departure time. If weather is OK, take I-40 to Little Rock, I-30 to Dallas, then I-20 to I-10 as recommended by twogypsies.

I traveled I-40 last month from Raleigh, NC to Little Rock. The road was pitiful for about 25 miles from West Memphis, then not too bad the rest of the way to LR.

If the weather is forecast to be bad between Memphis and Dallas, you can take I-55 from Memphis to Jackson, MS and get I-20 there. But that adds about 150 miles to the trip.

All good suggestions ... unless you want to party. In that case:
* Go due south to Gulf Shores, Ala., and eat at Lulu's (the restaurant run by Jimmy Buffet's sister); then
* Go due west to New Orleans (staying a Bayou Signette State Park during your time in The Big Easy); then
* Continue due west to San Antonio and feast on Tex-Mex along the River Walk; then
* Take I-10 and U.S. 385 to Big Bend National Park (OK ... there's not much partying there, but the place is amazing!); then
* Go just a tad out of your way to see Carlsbad Caverns; and
* Stop in Tombstone, Ariz. (The Town Too Tough to Die and home of the newspaper with the greatest name ever, The Tombstone Epitaph); before
* Finishing in Tucson.

It isn't the shortest route, but you'll enjoy the ride (and should avoid much of that winter weather you're worrying about).
