Trip to Great Lakes

Getting ready to go from MD to the Great Lakes area most likely Petoskey. Any suggestions for route, places to stay and things to see. Not in a real big hurry we want to take our time.

Whatever you do, STAY AWAY FROM CHICAGO TO GARY INDIANA.. 10 million people within 50 mile radius of downtown Chicago. Congestion, construction, and tolls. AHHHGG.....

Can't really help you w/route as we did a tour of the "mitten" part of MI so we were all over the place.

For Petoskey, we stayed at Hearthside Grove (see my photos). Beautiful Class A resort. Just fun to walk around & see all the high dollar coaches there. Although we haven't stayed here, I've also read good reviews for Bay Harbor, now under new ownership.

Things to do:
Drive (in your car, not RV) M119 the Tunnel of Trees route & get a bite to eat at Leggs Inn..delicious Polish food. Yummy chocolates & fudge at Kilwin's in Petoskey.
You're about 2hr NE of Sleeping Bear Dunes & Traverse City area. Walk to the Dunes (well, not from Petoskey...I meant once you get there ) & take a stab at climbing up the 300ft dune. Going down it is easy...getting back up, that's the hard part. Tons of wineries in the area too.
You're also about 45minutes south of Mackinac (pronounced Mac-in-naw) Island. That's a great day trip.

How is it one careless match can start a forest fire but it takes a whole box to start a campfire?

Can't add anything to NLOVNIT other than to say that I have never seen so many Prevost in one place. A beautiful resort.
Right near Empire, MI is a very nice park only minutes from the entrance to Sleeping Bear Dunes SP. It is a split park in that they have one section for Class A only and another for 5ers and C class.

That would be Indigo Bluffs if you're interested in staying in that area. Class A side & Rental Park side. If you want shade, stay in the older Rally Park side. We stayed in the Class A side - unique layout to the sites (they're in a pinwheel design so you aren't side by side with other sites) with beautiful naturalized plantings between. Since we were there, they've upgraded the ammenities with another pool & clubhouse.

Just like with Hearthside, you can reserve an improved site. Owners rent them out when they're not there.

Do Not Miss the Leelanau Peninsula. Sleeping Bear Dunes was chosen as Good Morning America's "Most Beautiful Place in Amerca", two year's ago. Empire is tiny, but has one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. The whole area, including Traverse City is just a joy to explore.

Being a Michigander those are very good tips that you've been given and would be a great trip. Enjoy our State and Be Safe!

I do have to apologize for our roads that you will encounter in certain areas though.

A couple of years ago my wife and I traveled up the west coast of Mich. to Makinac then down the east coast of Mich. One of the best trips we have ever taken. West coast of Mich. is really nice. We camped in Ludington Mi. at a campground called Vacation Station. Very nice town and very nice campground.
